volume pedals

Don't see any threads on volume pedal usage here. Any one got advise on what to buy. Something tough, smooth and trouble free would be nice. Morley, Dunlop, Boss? Tell me what you know is great.

Ernie ball seems to be the favorite volume pedals here depending on the pictures users have been sending in on "post your pedalboard" thread.

I'm going to pick one up soon as i get the money for it

Ernie Ball is the standard of high quality volume pedals. Plus the tuner out is quite handy.

I recently picked up the Ernie Ball VP Jr. I was nervous at first because of all the "Tone suck" it is supposed to get with the Tuner out that people talk about on here and other forums, but honestly I have no issue with that.

I A/B'd the "Tone Suck" having my guitarist plug and unplug the pedal randomly while I played and neither of us could tell a difference. I DO however have a buffered pedal before it (VP is last in my chain) and that's supposed to help.

The other trick I learned is on the inside of the pedal is micro switch (it's right behind where the tuner out is on the inside). The switch changes the throw of the pedal making it more linear and smooth (IMO) than the factory setting. The factory setting would give you very little response until the last 20%, and then you'd get about 60% of your volume in that last little bit.

All in all I love it. Small, sturdy and dependable

One utmost feature must be smooth and long volume control. I want it to control and swell the volume rather than the more off/on type.

phmike: I'm using the 250K passive. When I bought it I had all passive basses, though I just dropped an Audere into a J-bass.. so who knows what'll come next

My roommate has a Boss FV-500H that I was just playing with the other day. I have to say I was very impressed. These always looked cheap to me when I saw pictures online, but it's actually put together very well. It has a screw on the bottom for adjusting how easily the pedal moves. It also has a separate jack for using it as an expression pedal. Comparing it to a Morley Slim Line Volume pedal I have, the sweep is much better on the Boss. I have to say, the Boss is about the same size as the bigger Ernie Ball pedals, and if I were choosing between those two I would probably go for the Boss. If I wanted a smaller pedal like VP Jr though, I would go with the Ernie Ball. Just my $0.02.

New question to the pudding: What factor of a volume pedal causes tonal change as opposed to going into amp w/o pedal in the chain. Are there any "transparent" pedals?

I purchased the Dunlop DVP-1.
Built out of aluminum and works excellent. /very sturdy and swells perfectly smooth and the pedal action is adjustable so that the tension is just right against muscle action/feel.
I love my new pedal. Maybe this post will help someone else.

so when it comes to the Ernie Ball ones.. I guess the 250k is for use with passive basses, and the 25k is for actives.. but how well does each work with the opposite bass? like a passive bass thru a 25k or an active thru the 250k?.. basically Im wanting one pedal for all my basses.. (yeah, i eat my cake.)

I've never had a problem with the Ernie Balls, I don't know which ones I have, but they work perfectly well with both active and passive.
I only have the big ones, an older one and another about 6 years old. Both work great still.

Well a volume pedal is pretty much like the volume pots in your bass. I wouldn't expect any of the passive pedals to color any more than the pots in your bass. Unlike other effects pedals that actually manipulate the sound (and suck tone), a volume is just that.

I use an Ernie Ball. It's built in an aluminum brick, has a tuner out, and you can change the taper. Totally solid pedal and worth every penny in my opinion.
