Volume suddenly went to max and won't turn down.

While practicing I had my volume lowered to around 50%. Suddenly it jumped to full volume and has stayed there. No knob twirling has any effect. It's full volume whether it's on or off. What could cause this? A faulty pot? My configuration is two pickups with Vol, Blend, Tone.

Do the blend and still work normally? Is this a passive (no preamp) bass? The problem you've described is a bit bizarre. Even if the ground came completely disconnected, there would still be at least some volume or tone change from the volume knob. Either the volume pot failed internally or some bare metal in the control cavity is forming a jumper between two of the pot terminals.

It's a passive bass and the tone and blend are still working as they should. I'm beginning to suspect there is some sort of pot fault but I'll take a look at the wiring to see if there is some contact between the terminals.

It's working properly now. There was a poor solder joint that wasn't obvious at first but the volume control now works as it should . Thanks for your response.
