Yes, I have the same experience.
It will play your ipod or whatever, but your bass will sound like crap.
New batteries will do the trick.
Vox Amplugs are great! I own the Bass and the Acoustic versions. Bass sounds pretty killer and it's a good practice tool. The Acoustic one I use to squeeze some very nice acoustic-like sounds from my Fender Tele. I'm thinking of getting another Bass Amplug since my current amps have been on the fritz.
anyone tried this guy? it has a metronome as well..

I have that (always thought it was TU-80 though). It works well, specially for the money. I don't particularly like the sound of the metronome, but it's bearable for a few minutes at a time. Something to bear in mind is that the aux in is LOUD. That's good for an MP3 player, but when I use a laptop I've got to keep the vol on the computer really low (the TU-88 doesn't have a volume control for the aux in).
Overall, I'd recommend it.
Yes you can. You need a 3.5mm to 3.5mm stereo cable, but the AmPlug does have an "aux in" so you can jam along to computer or other MP3 player.
I have one, it's OK for what it is, but I don't think it's that great.
I am looking for something like this as well. The problem I have is that I am hearing impared and need to have something with out to my A&H XONE headphones so I can hear the bass. THis is cheap enough that I could try it, but being the anal guy I am, I want to know what else is out there that will accomplish the same thing?
Just tried out the following vox amplugs with my NS Designs EUB (using the magnetic and piezo pups, together and seperately).
Lead, Twin, Bass, Acoustic.
Acoustic was pretty ****, think it was a duff device.
Bass was ok, but very quiet. Nothing special, pretty uninspiring.
Lead was all about overdrive. Actually sounded really cool with the bass, but not good for clean.
Twin was fab, and is the one I bought. Nice clean tone. Nice over driven tube drive sound with gain all the way up (gets pretty loud at full gain and full volume). The FX is a chorus, but is a subtle flanger/stereo widener. Very useable.
All models were much louder than the bass model.
I should add that I tried all models in the shop with Shure SE215 in ear monitors.
I then tried the Twin at home with Beyerdynamic DT880 pro (250 ohm) open backed headphones.

For the price I think its great. I can just throw in some buds and wander around the house without worrying about the police knocking on my door. Sometimes I clip my tiny mp3 to my strap, plug it in and play along to whatever I want.
Resurrecting this thread in light of the release of the amplug 2. Has anyone tried this and if so, know how it compares to the original?

Mine just came in yesterday. Gotta say, for $40, it is hard to beat. Does what it says and works well. I saw reviews saying that the construction is a little suspect. Admittedly, it does feel a tad flimsy, but with a little care it ought to be okay.
The tone is much crisper than running headphones through my Crate BX-15 (not saying much, I know).
And I love the on-board drum beats (and click track). It really does offer a fair amount of features for the price tag.
Hell, I played with it for about an hour and a half last night with only 3 strings (awaiting my replacement G from BSO).
Overall, satisfied with this little purchase.

I have the original bass amplug. I never liked the jack, it was never tight and crackled my barrel jacks.
Fast forward, 5 years, I've put electrosocket jacks in all my bases, no more barrel jacks striping away! But my amplug wouldn't fit anymore, because of the recessed jack
So I modded it and it sounds and works amazing! Should've done this a while ago.

Review for the amplug 2 bass:
Good practice tool with the potential to declutter all the mess of amps; pedals and cables around a guitar regularly played at home.
When paired with a (no-latency) portable speaker (I am using a Creative Sound Blaster Roar 2 (33Watts RMS)), it can be used to accompany acoustic instruments around the fireplace. This is a nice outcome but its success will depend of how clear the bass response of the speaker is.
There is a noticeable white noise; blatantly noticeable when the tone knob is high. I tend to keep this knob as low as possible.
There are three gain settings that provide something akin to the warmth; compression and saturation inherent to a valve amp. Nonetheless, all of 'em target a clean tone.
The flexibility of the control over the rhythm section is surprising given such a small device. You should read the manual in order to properly enjoy it.
