VT Bass vs Palmer for speaker simulation

Hi Justin,

I was just wondering if there was any significant difference between both when it comes to speaker simulation.

I'm currently trying to sort out what would be the best setup and if I'd be good with just the VT bass (since I don't currently need it as an overdrive effect) and a DI like my Bassbone or a REDDI.

So by looking at the following setups :

1 - Inst. ---> VT Bass ---> DI (Bassbone or else) ---> FOH
2 - Inst. ---> Preamp ---> Palmer ---> FOH

Is one better than the other? Is there another better setup? Anything else I might be overlooking?

Thanks!

Try doing setup #1. It's nice and simple. Palmer is a bit esoteric, and not very "sculptable" tone-wise for bass anyway. I don't find there's a lot of range to its sound.

Very old post but I see in the latest UK Bass Guitar mag (#80) that Geddy Lee uses a Palmer speaker simulator in his rig and says it is essential to his sound. Looking at Palmer's web site it acts as a speaker load available in 2, 8 & 16 ohms (I would normally want a 4). It acts as a speaker load with a DI. The Avalon U5 DI will also act as a speaker up to 400 watts which is much higher than Palmer I believe.

Have you had any recent experience with these devices or others? The Palmer is about $700 so really pricey. It would be nice to use my actual amp (instead of modeling) in a silent stage situation so I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on the Palmer and similar speaker simulator/load/replacement devices.

Here's Avalon U5:

I am using the VT AND the REDDI (who isn't a speaker simulator/hi-cut/low-pass!)
