Vulfpeck with Bernard Purdie in Central Park

These are not my videos, but I was lucky enough to be there with my wife as the show happened to overlap with our NYC trip. They had loads of guests, including a second guitar player and a percussionist from their last album, sax/keyboard player and vocalist Joey Dosik, several other horn players, and the legend himself, Bernard Purdie, on about 5 or 6 songs. We had an incredible time! And they followed this up with three sold-out shows at the Brooklyn Bowl. I'm so happy for these guys, they just keep getting better.

I'm in awe of Volfpeck's career. Those guys got a huge buzz going without even really being a band at first.

I'm in awe of Volfpeck's career. Those guys got a huge buzz going without even really being a band at first.

I didn't hear about them till 2013, so maybe I missed that initial buzz. But although they didn't play in front of live audiences until they had 3 EPs out, they recorded pretty much all of their early stuff live while filming the videos. They didn't tour until they pulled off the Sleepify deal in 2014 (all the shows were free as a result). It was a pretty smart strategy given the brutal economics of the biz these days.

I hadn't realised that spotify stunt was so successful. And crucial.

They just played some knockout gigs in london, with audiences singing not only choruses and harmonies, but also at one point sustaining the entire performance by singing an instrumental riff with no band accompaniment (Fugue State). There were repeated calls "Theo, Theo ... " and "Joe, Joe, ...". While playing with Joey Dosik, Jack and Theo between them (and individually) played every instrument on stage. Fantastic night ... the most entertaining band I've seen in a very long time.
