8k!!!!!!! For a bass! Why do I have to want a Wal so bad.

Wal 4 string MK1 = £4050
Left handed = no extra charge
Figured Sycamore or Birdseye Maple = +£230
Fretted ebony fingerboard = £160 (no extra charge for dot markers)
Total = £4440 + any shipping
So duty is about $500, what does shipping usually cost?

I had a bass shipped by Bass Direct from the UK for £80, if I remember right I think Wal charges something like £200? So before shipping/tax/duty/payment fees, your bass would cost $7105 USD.
So that is $7600 for the bass and shipping... then I pay customs (anyone know how much they charge?), plus whatever payment fees... anything else?
Lol yikes! So that bass including shipping would be $7600 + duty/tax/payment fees, definitely over $8000. Plus duty is kinda tricky, it's very specific, if it were something like American Walnut duty would be less than English sycamore as you're charged more for wood not originating from the US. Should be able to find some info here, but I've phoned them before and gotten valuable information Invalid Link Removed .
Interesting!....the 2 I imported from other countries, the duty officer never asked what kind of wood it was
I got dinged for it the first time with my lacewood, so I had the shipper claim the second as Canadian birdseye maple to be certain, I did the same when I shipped the lacewood to Jan (I miss it!).
I'm still buds with the guy who bought my Lacewood!

More than $8000, but yeah it's a lot of money. Keep in mind though that you only have to pay a deposit to get the process started, then pay the rest in stages over the next 2 years. Still ends up costing over $8000 but it's more manageable. They do come up on the used market, and though they do retain a high dollar value, $4500-$6500 is easier to swallow. They're so solid too, I've owned two used Wal's so far and they've been a joy, I went to set my maple up last night and intonate it, normally a must when then weather changes, but I was surprised to really not have to make any changes to it.
That's true. I also always have 1 zero percent interest CC open, which I close when the 0% rate goes away... so I could always make the final payment with one of those, plus any duty charges etc, and have even more time to pay on it.
Thing is, if you pay through PayPal using your credit card, not only will you be charged a high currency exchange rate, but you'll also be charged a fee for doing the conversion (I think it was +2.5% when I spoke with Visa last week), which will add up over multiple payments. I had that black Geddy bought last week and it ended up falling apart because of all the fees and additional costs.
I'm planning to pay with cash through bank transfer as the thing is built, and then possibly do a final payment with a credit card to buy myself even more time to pay it off.
It'll buy you time, but you'll still be liable for the high exchange rate and exchange service fee plus PayPal fees. Not sure how large the final payment is, if it's one of the bigger payments or not.
