Walnut Jazz

Update

I went to put some more finish on this morning. One thing I noticed was that the grain wasn't filling in as I was expecting. So, I went to something I previously said I didn't like, and that's the Tried and True product. I had indicated that I didn't like it because it had too much wax in it. But I have to admit, it does a great job on filling the grain on a black limba project. So I decided to cut the Tried and True with 50% linseed oil. Looks like that's not quite doing the job. I'll see what full strength T&T will do in a couple days

Update,

Sorry, I couldn't get the camera to focus any better, and it's hard to tell from this photo, but the grain is filling in nicely.

I alluded to a prior walnut build.

Have a great day

That is a lovely looking "dinky J" you have there, really just beautiful.
That previous build looks awesome imo, love the grain lines across the body.

Thanks.

Oddly enough, when the wife asked about this build, I explained to her that I made it smaller, the first thing that came out of her mouth was.."Oh, it's a dinky" I have no idea where she got that from. Coincidence? I highly doubt she knows that this is an industry term for a slimmed down body.

Oh well. Another pic!
The body is now sanded down to 320. 400, and 600 to go. I'm really liking the way it looks. Might not put anymore on after those 2 passes. Started fabricating the neck as well. Planes, Rasps, Routers, and Sanders got me to where it currently at. Need another hour or 2 of fine tuning the profile, and about the same to finish off the radius.

Had a little problem with Mr Chipout again. This time he showed up on the finger board, right about where the 5th fret would be. Probably just gonna mix a solution of CA and African Blackwood dust, and we'll just spackel that puppy.

Nothing looks better on walnut than a semi gloss gunstock finish. This is going to look sharp

Wholeheartedly agree! I'm getting a little stoked on this one.

Did get some time to profile the neck. The little Ibex planer I use is a addicting to use. It works really well, and once you get going, some times it's hard to stop.
Thanks for lookin!

Didn't get much of a chance this last week or so. Lots-o-stuff going on.

I did get the profile on this the way I's like it, and I've started to put the finish on. First coat you see here is Birchwood Casey Sealer. Just by the looks of the first coat, there will probably be a couple more. Also nice to see a very mild flame in the whole piece

Here's where it's at. Cheers

Looking great!

You've inspired me to go for it on the walnut neck by the way....I was at the lumberyard the other day and picked up a nice piece of walnut to make a couple necks from!

Happy I could inspire you!

Here's my thoughts on the viability of Black Walnut for this purpose. Now granted, we probably don't get Cuban Mahogany here in the states, but it's the only one I found numbers for readily. As we see in the numbers, it's just a little better than mahogany, and there are a large number of instruments out there that have mahogany necks. So I'm not really that concerned.

Black Walnut

Average Dried Weight: 38 lbs/ft3 (610 kg/m3)
Specific Gravity (Basic, 12% MC): .51, .61
Janka Hardness: 1,010 lbf (4,490 N)
Modulus of Rupture: 14,600 lbf/in2 (100.7 MPa)
Elastic Modulus: 1,680,000 lbf/in2 (11.59 GPa)

Mahogany (Cuban)
Average Dried Weight: 37 lbs/ft3 (600 kg/m3)
Specific Gravity (Basic, 12% MC): .53, .60
Janka Hardness: 930 lbf (4,120 N)
Modulus of Rupture: 10,790 lbf/in2 (74.4 MPa)
Elastic Modulus: 1,351,000 lbf/in2...

Update:

I have completed the oil sanding portion of this build and am now starting to put on the final coats. It's coming along nicely, and should be ready by Christmas.
My tests with Casey's True oil didn't go so well with a linseed base I had established, so I'll finish the body with linseed/varnish blend. The neck is done with Tru Oil. My next walnut build will be finished in TruOil

Thanks for looking

Again, more paint drying pics

Put down the last coats. Will buff this out in a couple weeks. Probably not ready for Christmas.

One of my biggest failings as a builder is that I often times get impatient. This build right now is a perfect example. It is so close to being ready, that I really want to put it together. NOW! I've done this too many times in the past. I started to do some assembly on it this morning, but the finish is still to soft. I stopped myself. Gotta let it cure.

Is there a "Sawdust Anonymous" out there?
