Walnut Jazz

Do you have a fix on the estimated weight yet? I'm really curious as Walnut can be heavy.
Kirk, This came in at 9.6Lbs Not too bad for a solid black walnut bass

You have chosen wisely. That wood deserves to be drooled on. I volunteer.
So to ease your pain, I thought I'd offer a little game for you. It's called Pavlov's dog. Wanna play? :)

Good stuff! I also agree with routing the truss rod channel under the fingerboard as opposed to Fender's way...just more efficient and tidy, imo. Beautiful build!

Thanks Rich!

You were asking about a walnut neck early in this thread. So far, so good. It seems real stable. The truss rod works really well. First big test will be when she goes on her Maiden voyage tomorrow night.

Right now I'm messing around with different tone caps.

BTW, IT's ALIVE!

Stayed up till 1:30 this morning ironing out the setup, and I have it pretty well dialed in. Just one more minor thing to do, polish the nut, and she's complete.

I'll be waiting for a nice sunny day to get some nice pics to post

Thanks for looking!!

Cheers

Glad to hear it! I have a walnut/cherry/maple build coming up. I'll definitely have to plan an all-walnut build. I think a J is in order....I figure I need to try building a bolt-on anyways.... :D

First, Thanks everyone for following along. And thanks for all the positive feedback!!

Secondly, now that I have had some time to play it a little, here are my initial initial impressions

Please keep in mind that it is hard for me to give an objective review of this instrument for a large number/obvious reasons at this time. In a couple months or so from now, when the honeymoon is over, I'll be in a better position. Not right now.

At the end of the day when we consider all the things that go into the "sound" of an instrument, we all get embroiled in all sorts of discussions that never ever lead us to a "standard definition" of what we can expect from each build. Granted there are some generalities, but that's all they are.

Rather, I believe that each instrument has it's own sweet spot. I believe as a bassist, I should be more concerned on exploiting the strong attributes of an instrument, rather than trying to define it the attributes of an instrument through the use of tone woods, pups and so on. When I build an instrument, I use quality and mainstream components, and really nice looking pieces of wood. When I'm done, I have a beautiful instrument, that sounds really good. That's all I want.

Sorry for the rant, but that discussion kind of goes to this bass. For walnut, I would expect something a little on brighter side. It is far from that. This is a low end rumble generator. I plug this bass in, and for some reason, it rattles the walls. Same amp settings as the rest of my instruments. The whole house shakes! My other basses don't do this. Even the active ones. Low end is very well defined as well. The high end lacks a little character, but is still very usable.

Can't wait to get on stage tonight. I'm just dying to hear what it will sound like in that environment.
