Walnut

Gonna have to make a bass out out of these one day. Beautiful, just beautiful.

I love it as a body wood for fretless- I've had two made with a walnut body. This is with my ever-present caveat that I think body wood has a noticeable effect on tone. It is almost always a heavy body wood though, so these days I wouldn't do it again. I prefer lighter-colored tops, but in good lighting, walnut makes a beautiful top wood as well.

Wow just gorgeous! You are inspiring me! The reason is that many years ago I heard this chainsaw out behind my apartment building. The city was cutting down this huge black walnut tree that was sick. This thing had a HUGE trunk. So I ask the guys what they were going to do with the wood. "Oh just haul it to the dump!" they said. "How about leaving a couple big chunks of trunk for me", I ask. "No problem!"

So then how do I convert it to slabs. You can't take it to a sawmill because they won't cut city trees because they may have nails in them that ruin the expensive saw. So I got my brother-in-law who has a chainsaw to come over and for sharing the wood he cut the trunks into slabs about 3 ft by 2 inches thick. They've been aging in my basement ever since. They are great now with just a few small cracks at the very ends.

So now the moment of truth draws near as to what kind of bass to build from it. I'm thinking of just copying my Alembic Epic (which is mahogany) as a fretless 6 string for the first trial bass. I really want to have some kind of killer design for boutique wood like this.

Great looking bass.

Dunno if just a walnut top has much of an affect on the sound, but it looks nice anyway. I like satin type finishes but I think high gloss accentuates the grain a little more.
