"Wanna buy a REFRIGERATOR...cheap???"

He said it might be a defective speaker, which basically means to me there could be anything at all wrong with the speaker. Whether it's a manufacturing defect, user error, or dropped on the ground the end result would still be the same. I fail to see how that's any different from the PM or the replies in the thread.

Yes, this is correct. I also suggested that he have a trusted tech look at it to see if the speaker is really bad. The point is that I don't know what it is, and a basket can be bent or warped or shifted by as little as 0.005" causing a problem, the clearances are very tight in these drivers. This is not something generally visible to the eye and there are troubleshooting techniques that a speaker tech would use to determine what the problem really is. It may not be a defective speaker, but something extermal to the driver. I have seen a bit of styrofoam packing peanut stuck to the back of the surround, a wire touching the basket, a loose mounting screw, a bit of guitar string that made it inside the cabinet stuck between the back of the cone and the basket and other things that COULD be the cause but I can not be positive from 10,000 miles away.

The problem I have here is that I have personally gone out of my way to help Sparky, just like I have done with others here on TB (both local and international) because we do take personal pride in our products and customer service. I expect that in return, my efforts are treated respectfully and that my words and assistance are not twisted, taken out of context or misrepresented. Sparky conveniently left out the contact information for Australian specific service that I provided:

Invalid Link Removed

At the very least, he has a local to him contact that he can work with to determine the best way to service his speaker, including determining if the driver itself is really bad. We do not know this to be the case until it's looked at by a technician.

Respectfully, I have done all that I can for Sparky here. It is up to him to follow through at his end. I do not want to jepordize my ability to help other forum members with any help that they may find themselves needing in the future.

i'm not sure what's the deal here. i can't see anything that would reflect negatively towards you, agedhorse, or that anyone with a bit of experience with you on this forum would change their opinion. you are a valuable contributor here. i think everybody that's been here, even for a short while, knows that. OP needs to chill, IMHO.

I asked the mods to look the thread over. I don't think talking about my amp without the manufacturer's representative looking over my shoulder is too much to ask. Agedhorse gave me the name of the Fender service center, told me there was no warranty, asked me for sales information (which he provided to the board) and neglected to tell me a great deal, apparently, about what his opinion of the possibilities were. I haven't asked anything of agedhorse, or Genz Benz other than for info on how to get my amp back in order.

Just one other thing: I did ask a question in my last post. Agedhorse, you told the board (but not me, personally) that it might have been dropped. I hope I have not taken that out of context. If this happened, can you tell me how I can troubleshoot it myself? The nearest Fender repair service is a considerable distance and I don't own a car so I want to diagnose as much as I can.

My guitarist looked at it today. He doesn't think its blown. (I never said it was). Its humming a lot on the low notes, almost imperceptible on the higher ones. He says that if it was blown, usually the whole tonal range would be shot.

No good deed goes unpunished.

Andy did nothing wrong except try to help you and you are being way overly sensitive to anyone who is trying to help but doesn't necessarily answer in the exact way you want them to. I've certainly checked out of wanting to help, that's for sure. I know the answer to the thread you just posted and I don't dare reply because I'll get my head bitten off again. Hey man, I have a wife for that kind of stuff!

Jimmy,

Andy helped me find a Fender service center near me. That's all. He gave me a link. Other than that, he told me that he was "just an engineer trying to be helpful' but did not inform me, apparently of all the possibilities of what could be wrong with the amp (how can I make a decision about service if I don't know all the possibilities?) He posted my PI, in a completely inappropriate manner, and I am still waiting for hinm to tell me how to tell if the amp has been dropped and what to do about it. I have to differ on him being helpful. I find him duplicitous.

As for not helping me in my other thread -- say it ain't so Jimmy! say it ain't so!

Yeah, geez... You defensive, duplicitous manufacturer's representatives need to stop lurking around the boards, looking over our shoulders, and offering unsolicited advice to frustrated customers. Didn't you know lending a helpful hand is the height of rudeness and shows contempt for the customer?!

/sarcasm

How did he help me? he gave the board a completely different list of possibilities than he told me personally? Really, how is that helpful?

FWIW, I see three threads on this topic, not two. In one, you describe seeing physical damage to the speaker, and are asking about how best to fix it. Since you are not experienced in this area, Agedhorse's advice is sound: take it to a repair shop.

Also, you will get nowhere with ANYBODY here by attacking Agedhorse. He has been consistently helpful to ANYBODY with a question or issue. Nobody here has earned a better reputaion than he has. I suggest you reread his posts and PM's. He is trying to help, and now he can't respond to you any further without jeopardizing his ability to help others. I suspect he has a lot or personal pride in his products, so your attacks may be more hurtful than you intended.

This marks the first time I have ever seen you or any manufacturer to be faulted for it. I know the vast majority of this forum appreciate it and think you guys are a class act. I venture that if a poll were done about CS, that you guys would be on top.

I asked the mods to look the thread over. I don't think talking about my amp without the manufacturer's representative looking over my shoulder is too much to ask.

You are taking this way out of proportion. I don't think the manufacturer is looking over your shoulder at all. They have tried to help you, and they are trying to make sure that any misinformation posted in this thread is corrected to accurately represent fact.

Also, keep in mind this is a public forum.

My guitarist looked at it today. He doesn't think its blown. (I never said it was). Its humming a lot on the low notes, almost imperceptible on the higher ones. He says that if it was blown, usually the whole tonal range would be shot.

Unfortunately, your guitarist is wrong. It is very possible the voice coil is shot, which would be heard on the low notes and not necessarily on the others.

As I posted in your other thread (the 3rd one now), manually push the woofer in and out with your ear to it. Does it make any weird noise, like grinding?

he gave the board a completely different list of possibilities than he told me personally? Really, how is that helpful?

You're really twisting this out of proportion. All possibilities were given to you, just in different mediums. This is your thread, right? And it was mentioned in this thread? Just because it wasn't all given straight to you in a PM doesn't mean it wasn't meant for you.

C'mon. People, including GB, are trying yo be helpful and you're basically crapping all over it.

With the exception of Larry Hartke, find another bass amp manufacturer that would give this kind of service. You've been provided possibilities of what the problem could be without really doing anything other than starting a thread about it. If it were something easily diagnosed with the information given I have no doubt that it would have been.

With the info that was provided, you were given a list of next steps to take to resolve the issue. There is only so much a tech can do remotely before needing on site hands on support.

I retract my previous post on page one, as at that time, only a very small portion of the necessary information was available. And, having witnessed dozens of successful conclusions , helped along by the guys at GB, I strongly object to the op's treatment of those fine helpful guys and call troll on this whole thing. Shameful misbehaviour.
