Want a New Bass Thread

So I'm looking to buy another bass. Now, I don't get to play many different basses very often so I'm going to ask here because I know that you guys know what you are on about most of the time.

What I'm looking for is obviously a recommendation. What I am after is a bass that is really punchy? I guess you would call it that. You know, a bass where you really can feel each note.

As for music that I play, I'm into punk in all it's varieties, hard rock, old metal and stuff that is similar. Some bassists that I really like the sound of are:
-Duff McKagan (Guns N Roses, Velvet Revolver)
-Dee Dee Ramone (The Ramones)
-Nikki Sixx (Motley Crue)(Shh)
-John Paul-Jones (Led Zeppelin)
-All of Metallica's past bassists
and
-Cliff Williams (ACDC), especially in songs like War Machine

I currently own an Epiphone Thunderbird and although I loved it when I first got it, I have grown to dislike something about it's sound and I can't really pinpoint what it is.

I also went to a gig at Easter and one of the bands' bassist that played there was playing a Stingray and I really loved the sound of it.

So all in all, based on the music that I'm into, I thought maybe a Precision of some sort? Or is it really a bass with a humbucking pickup that I want (Like the Stingray)?

Thoughts?

That is why I was considering a Fender Precision (MIM) or maybe a used Stingray. I saw a few Stingrays on the bay the other day for around $1000...

TBH the P and the 'Ray sound nothing alike.
Id suggest going on youtube and searching for P bass and Stingray and checking some videos of people playing them and listening to the tone. it'll give you a rough idea.

From what you've said id say definatly go for the 'ray. OR, if you prefer smaller neck profile (jazz type neck rather then the 'ray/p sized neck) then go for a Musicman Stirlin, not quite as gritty as the 'ray but still great tone.

Yeah, I know they are that's why I'm stumped haha.

you mentioned a P and a ray, what about a J or a P/J? What bass do you own now? What amp are you playing through? An amp upgrade might make more sense than a bass purchase

I have an Epi Thunderbird right now (I mentioned that in the OP).

And as far as amps go, I play through a bunch of different amps because I play at school as well as at home and at friends houses and have no way of getting my own amp to school. I do realise that I will never get a good sound when I'm not playing on an amp that isn't good (the school's) but still...

I did just buy a new amp. It has made my Thunderbird sound considerably better than what it did before the upgrade so I'm pretty content with my amp right now. I'm pretty sure that it's my bass that needs to be upgraded next.

I typically go with a P bass for Rock. You'll find that it sounds great in the mix.
Google images of the bass players that you want to sound like and see what their playing. Most important of all, find what best suits YOU. P basses get tone compliments quite often from other musicians at shows.
