I just sold mine on ebay. I miss it, but I never used the low B so I replaced it with a 4 string version.

I just sold mine on ebay. I miss it, but I never used the low B so I replaced it with a 4 string version.
Okay, I went to GC tonight to play around. They had a Pedulla TB5, a Rapture 5, and a Pentabuzz. The TB5 was okay. Nothing spectacular about it. The Rapture felt great. Very nice neck, and the B was very punchy. My only issue was the fit and finish. Nothing like what I would expect from a $1900 bass. It was pretty bad. Headstock was horrible. Truss Rod cover was crooked, so we took it off, and the screw whole was all screwed up (pardon the pun). The routing underneath was all chewed up, and it just look shabby like your typical Fender. I was very disappointed, because the tone and feel of the bass where spot on.
The Pentabuzz was in bad need of a setup, but I wasn't going to buy a fretless bass anyway. Other than that, it was very nice.
I played the other usual suspects you find at Guitar Center. Stingray 5 in HH, Warwick Corvette's, etc. I left knowing that nothing there was for me. So I came home, picked up my Modulus VJ and Q6, and felt right at home. I guess I'm still looking for a good 34" vintage 5 string. Perhaps I should just get a Flea J5, or a Fleat J/MM 5, and forget about all this mess.

Yeah, I've thought of that briefly. There's one hanging on the wall at another place across town. I've never tried it though. I'm also starting to look at the Lakland USA series a little more closely.
What's bugging me in all this is that the basses I'm looking at don't have P/J configs, which is what I set out to get. Perhaps I just need to get the MVP5 and forget about it.
If you're looking for a good value P/J five but not wanting something jazz shaped there are options. This is my LeCompte STSS-5. It has a Nordstrand NP5 and NJ5S split coil jazz, witha an Aggie OBP-3. It is the most perfect fiver I've played, and the tone is exactly what I wanted it to be. The price was within spittin' distance of the Pedula Rapture as well, which is a far less quality bass. Don't overlook the custom world. If you know just what you want but can't find it in a production bass, there are alternatives.

If I hadn't struck a deal on my Valenti, I could definitely see me going back and pick up one of those Yammies. 5 string Michael Anthony vibe, anyone, anyone....bueller ?
The 615 I had was the perfect bass for the player looking for Fender type tones in a PJ 5 string for relatively low bread. I sort of wish I would have gone with the passive 415 because it probably would have been a closer clone of the early BB5000that I loved so much.
Well, the more I check things out, the more I like the Lakland 55-02 and 55-94, at least I do with the pups blended. Stability of those maple necks is something I'm leary of. I've just had too many problems with them in the past for the climate I'm in. The 55-94 has graphite reinforcement, but I hate to spend so much more money just for that. Are there any other real differences between the 02 and 94 other than the fit and finish?
hmm, not sure about the number of frets, but I just ordered a p/j, p body, from Valenti this month, very reasonable. I know he can do the same in 5, again, I'm not sure about the 24 frets, might as well ask him. Also, I have yet to play mine but all the reviews of his basses, I've heard nothing but praise regarding upper fret access on his basses, so I would think you'd be alright on that score.

That was the first 5 string I ever bought. I got it for some country sessions that really needed a 5 string.
That thing lit up on tape like nobodys business. I hated it live but it flat out killed on tape.
Thanks again. The more I debate this in my head. the more Lakland seems like the right answer. I just want to give it a bit longer. I mean, when you want vintage tone and feel in a a quality five string bass, there really aren't that many options. I don't want a Yamaha or anything like that. Valenti is cool, but I don't want another Jazz-bodied bass. The Lakland is at least differnt in some ways. And I've never heard one sound bad.

The 55-02 also has the graphite reinforced neck, like the 55-94. The only other difference is that the Skyline neck is flat-sawn maple, while the US neck is quarter-sawn, but both have the graphite.
