Double Bass Wanted: Classical bass teacher near Berkeley, Ca

The headline says it all. I'm a jazz player located in Berkeley looking to improve my bowing facility. Any recommendations? Anyone ever study with and/or know of Robert Ashley?

Barry Green is in Oakland, Scott Pingel in San Francisco and all of the SFS players, Richard Duke, I'm sure there are a lot more, but those came to mind immediately.

do you play french or german? the people mentioned above are great, you could try steve tramontozzi as well (another symphony player).

I recommend Ben Harris or Andrew Trombley. Both are based in NYC but can teach you through a psychic, spirit world studio.

Thanks for the tips. To answer a previous question, I use german grip. I'll check out some of these names.

if you don't mind going for a drive, i'd recommend you at least take a lesson or two with Tom Derthick in sacramento. i studied with him for 5 years, and i think he is a truly exceptional teacher and a gifted player. he's a classical player, but jazz players that i know who have studied with him tell me that he has some interesting ideas about jazz arco playing that would be worth exploring. he teaches at UC Davis as well so if you could catch him there it would be less of a drive from berkeley.

Look up Richard Worn in San Francisco. He heads up the Worn Chamber PLayers. A great guy and good teacher. He will appreciate your jazz point of view and help you be creative.
