I really want a 4 on the floor. Reeeeeally bad. I just don't have $200+

That being said, right now I'm using a Caline Pure Sky. I repainted the housing and added some new knobs to be able to get over the aesthetics of the pedal, and I couldn't be happier. With volume and gain around 11 o'clock i hear little to no "grit" and only some nice fat-ness when engaged. It's an always on for me. Having the treble and bass controls help as well.

Doesn't have a clean blend, but it's none the worse for it, the 'voice' knob in addition to the treble and bass controls lets you get it to sit where you want it in the mix, and doesn't seem to suffer any low end loss unlike some guitar pedals. has a nice warm overdrive, from just a slight harmonic richness and fattening, into actual drive.
It's also pretty great value for money (or at least it is here)

I’m not looking for grindy or gritty. Just a warm-up with a light touch of breakup that responds when I dig in. I’d also like to be able to mix clean signal and effected signal to taste. Suggestions? Thanks!

1. Free The Tone Black Vehicle Bass Overdrive
   1. This handles subtle and warm like no other. The clean blend is great and instead of a single tone knob you get both treble and bass for EQ shaping. It's very touch sensitive and responsive. Also very expensive.
2. JAM Pedals Lucydreamer (Bass version)
   1. High Quality build and a wonderful, classic analog distortion sound. Handpainted, too.
3. Damnation Audio MBD-2
   1. I know an earlier user characterized it as crunchy--and that's true--but it has such a range of sounds that I've found it can do "warm" as well. Highly versatile. Also has a clean blend. What stands out to me the most is how full-bodied it sounds. That said, I've listed it third because I think the other two best match what you are looking for.

I'll throw out another vote for the 4 on the Floor Genzler pedal. It's the first OD that I could fall in love with. Very versatile. Get it -- You won't regret it.

The EBS billy sheehan signature pedal lets you balance wet and dry signals. You can also send wet or dry signals through separate effects loops. You can add, say, a suboctave to the clean signal and a compressor to the overdrive signal ... then blend to taste.

Effectrode tube drive is really slick. Great part about the pedal is rolling tubes to get the exact breakup desired.

The Genzler 4 on the floor is right up the alley you describe - blend, a lot of control over parameters, and it was born to do subtle.

Another suggestion that's simpler (no blend, but it works fie without one) that doesn't come up often here, is the Greer Amps Lightspeed. Not marketed to bass players, but it should be - sounds great, does subtle very well, doesn't lose any low end, and it's normal sized - The Genzler has to ear it's real estate, and I think it does, but you're short on that...... I have two pedalboards, and at this time one has the Genzler on it, the other has a Lightspeed.

The YYZ pedal is the most versatile OD I've used. Everything from a nice warm top crunch to full saturation.
