Without pressing the two together fully it seems like a nice snug fit to me - I just placed them together for the photos and I could lift the whole thing by the neck without screws if that's any indication.
So for those who are familiar with wiring pups direct to the jack for the 'virgin' style, would you suggest a series or parallel connection?

i'd suggest putting two mini toggle switches,
one three way for pickup selection
foreward=P middle=Both rear=J
second one for, series parallel
This would give a good bit of tonal control,while retaining
the virgin look..

You could leave the top blank and maybe have some sorta recessed mini pots on the back plate. That'd be cool! 
I'd say gold hardware, actually. I think it'd look good with the finish.
I personally couldn't do without a way to quiet my bass at my fingertips (i.e. on/off toggle or vol pot)... but that's just me. Maybe you could do one three way toggle... series/off/parallel?

i woulsnt wire it drect to jack, you have 2 pickups, might as well get some versatility. i'd probably wire it up vol vol tone, with a push pull pot for series/parralell on the 2 pups. you could also put a second push/pull pot in to put the p pup in paralell/ series to get a more hi fi sound oout of the p pup when in paralell.
also, use a 1M tone pot. turnong it down a bit will get you the same resistance as a 250k pot, but you can go brighter if necessary. people have this misconception that larger tone pot values make it all brighter, all it does is gives you a bit extra on the top end of the pots travel to make it a bit brighter. if you often play with the pot on full, how do you know you wouldnt like a slightly brighter tone?

I'd say this.
Volume/Tone (Split Pot), Volume/Tone (Split Pot), Blend? I really like the versatility of each PU having its own town control.

IMO, the bigger black knobs are the way to go. Smaller ones would get lost on that bass.
