OK, I have a dilema. I'm interested in replacing the neck on my short scale build with a medium scale. I haven't tried medium yet, and my bass body unexpectedly came with the access for the truss rod, so I want to switch to a warhead neck eventually anyway. I only got the tilt back neck because the pics I saw of the body I was getting all showed no truss rod access. I want roasted maple. There aren't any in the showcase right now. My original custom order took about 3 and half months.
Should I wait for one to show up in the showcase? Should I custom order? Think Warmoth would estimate when roasted maple will show up in the showcase again if I called?

By medium scale, do you mean 32"?

I wouldn't count on anything showing up in the showcase. It's one thing to watch for targets of opportunity, but if you really want something, you're better off ordering. Unless you're willing to wait an indefinite amount of time for something specific you want to arrive there perchance.

I would just place a custom order for exactly what you want. My shortscale warhead neck that I just recently received for my SS Jazz took 5 weeks to get to me from custom ordering it. I think if you are just ordering the neck alone you probably wont have to wait to long.

5 weeks isn't bad these days. My Musikraft neck is at 8 weeks and counting......

I have been jotting down wood combos and ideas for a while now and have been torn between chrome or black hardware. After seeing a rustic looking Bass when I was searching through Google I decided I would go that route kinda. Need more funds to order the body but not in a hurry. I chose Antique Copper/Bronze color for the hardware. I wanted something really different and found all the hardware at Emma Music in France. I will probably put a set of Active EMG P/J pickups in it but not positive on electronics yet. Going to be an interesting build but I have a good feeling it will turn out nice

Body will be:
Warmoth short scale P body routed for P/J (rear route no pickguard)
Roasted Swamp Ash with clear satin finish

Neck ordered today:
30" Warhead - Goncalo Alves with Wenge fretboard
Abalone inlays
6150 Gold Evo frets
Black TUSQ nut

Hardware ordered:
Schaller BML mini clover - vintage copper
Schaller 463 bridge - vintage copper
Schaller strap buttons - vintage copper
String guide - antique bronze
Neck plate - antique bronze
Input jack - antique bronze

I don’t recall paying extra for that. But, you may be correct. I should look up my order, but the fam is playing board games.

Since it’s the same amount of work no matter what or where you route, it should be no upcharge, IMO.

Conceptually I agree with you. And IMO, Warmoth should program their CNC machines to be able to route for any pickup in any location. But they haven't yet done so, and until they do, it means routing out any custom pickup route by hand.

Thank you! i am taking your suggestion and I am going to call Warmoth on Monday and ask them about the reverse P route. I had a Spector that used the reverse P and I really liked it...Very good idea..I will see what they say on Monday

Just to add an additional perspective, and to scratch a contrarian itch, I'm posting some stuff I posted on another thread about the reverse P.

People comment about the D & G sounding thinner with a standard P pickup near the bridge, as if the E & A wouldn't also sound thinner, and the E & A sound much worse when they're thinner. Also, when you're playing up the neck, you're more likely to be playing on the D & G, which means that part of the pickup relative to the length of string being played is actually similar to the other part relative to the E & A when you're playing down the neck.

I keep a bass in my living room for whenever I get the urge to play. Right now, that bass is a Fender Blacktop Jazz. So for the heck of it, to illustrate my point about relative location, I measured the distances from the bridge to the poles of both bridge pickup segments down to the closest 1/4", and then I arbitrarily picked some convenient places on the neck to compare.

The EA segment is 3 1/4 (13/4) inches from the bridge.
The 7th fret is 23 1/4 (93/4) inches from the bridge.
The EA segment is roughly 1/7th of the distance from the bridge to the 7th fret.

The DG segment is 2 1/4 (9/4) inches from the bridge.
The 14th fret is 15 1/2 (62/4) inches from the bridge.
The DG segment is roughly 1/7th of the distance from the bridge to the 14th fret.

So as far as string vibrations are concerned, the EA & DG pickup segments are sensing the strings at similar points on the strings at 7th and 14th frets, respectively. IMO, there just isn't much to gain by reversing a P pickup in the bridge position.

I ask because I spent yesterday and today removing the thick gloss finish and a fair amount of maple off my blocked n bound neck seen in the pic below. All in all, after 4 coats of tru oil, the neck is exactly 0.12” thinner at both the 1st and 12th frets. BUT, it’s still thicker than Warmoth’s posted “slim profile” specs from their website. Funny thing is, my before-mod measurements are off from Warmoth’s by exactly the thickness of their fretboards: 0.25” . So, I think Warmoth is inadvertently misrepresenting their neck specs by forgetting to add in the .25” fretboard thickness, which is huge!

I dont have a neck measurement to contribute, but I will say that there are some errors on their site. I had emailed them about a vintage fret size discrepancy and they confirmed it and said they would update it. It doesnt look like they have though.

I did request a reverse P route and they said it will be $45 for the request.. They will get back to me in a day or so on if they can accommodate my request. Justin, the guy I talked to said a lot of people request that option but they all have different definitions of a reverse P route. i explained that I didn't wand to change the center line position/placement. that I just wanted the bass side and treble side flipped like this Spector.

I had specific locations for mine. They got them perfect... exactly where I wanted.

I think I mentioned reshaping my Warmoth P neck here. Turns out that removing the finish, taking 1/8” off the thickness, fret end shaping, and rolling the binding edge took off 2oz LOL. Finished bass is 8.8 pounds now. Yeah I know... my digital bathroom scale method could be off by that much. But, it does play and feel like a different bass now, a much better bass!

It inspired me to buy another Warmoth neck. I got the birdseye with rosewood board, white pearl blocked and bound J neck in the classifieds.

My definition of reversed p is like the mark hoppus signature bass. The E and A strings are in the same place but the D and G strings are closer to the neck.
