Blast! Seeing that copper hardware now makes me want to start a new build. Kind of thinking a rear rout jazz with a musicman in the sweet spot and a precision right at the heel...now the question is what color...

Now I am questioning myself. I was doing the measuring and it seems like an EMG35 rout would fit right under the truss rod channel without interfering with it, but getting the precision pickup centered under it would dip into that channel. If EMG did a single coil P-bass pickup, I might do that too. I just hate soldering, lol.
So, you’re wanting a split P that is closer to the neck than mine is... closer than under the 24th fret octave location?
Is your DG coil under the harmonic, or center line on the pickup? I was doing my figuring with the center of the pickup under the harmonic, but my measurements may have also been off.
Btw y’all... I snagged that j bass neck from the classifieds. It’s slim taper w/ graphite. After holding it and studying it, I’m 99% sure my 1 11/16 nut P bass neck was misrepresented in the Warmoth gallery. There’s no way it was slim taper, and it probably has steel bars too, which would explain its heaviness. As I’ve said in this thread, I shaved a full 1/8” off the thickness and I would bet it’s still thicker than the j neck I just received. I’ll measure tomorrow.

I just checked and I was wrong! My pickup is not centered under that harmonic. The DG coil is under it.

I had to have Musikraft build a neck with 7.5 radius, and a slim, modern c taper. My Hefner neck has it, but Hefner is no longer in business. What brand is yours?
No worries, man. That just confirmed my measurements were in the right ballpark, and I wouldn't be able to fit a Precision centered. I might go with the EA coil under the harmonic, but the more I think about it the more an EMG seems to fit the build in look and sound.
It’s Warmoth. Super slim, even with the thick poly that Warmoth applied. And, fully loaded with heavy Hipshot tuners, it still weighs 0.4 pounds less than the ultralight equipped maple one that my goblin flake bass sports. Yeah, I mounted it just for weight comparison LOL. I prefer the maple though. It looks so perfect on that bass!
So I ordered another neck like I mentioned in a previous post. This of course means they'll restock what I was looking for in the showcase well before my order is made, haha. Roasted maple medium scale (32") Warhead. Don't tell the short scale club.
Apparently the neck heel routing is popular, just heard back from Warmoth and I'm the third guy to ask about it in a week, lol. I'm pretty settled on EMG35 neck/Musicman sweet spot, now I just tossed a curveball at them...I am thinking of ditching the copper hardware idea and just doing a Mooncaster build. I heard a while ago that they could potentially do a full scale one by special request, seeing if that's still the case.
I asked if they could do a different bridge rout so I could still do that copper hardware, but I am doubting it. Kinda bummed, I was also looking forward to the idea of a black and copper bass. Oh well. There's always next build.

I recently emailed TV Jones for pole spacing measurements. I can use a neck and bridge set of Thunder Mags, placed in Rick locations, using a 1.5” nut J neck, and the poles will match up nicely w/ the strings. I need to talk to Warmoth and see if they’ll do the route for the “universal” version of the pickup (see pic). The standard soapbar version isn’t near as attractive, IMO.
I await your review of the thundermags. That’s the tv Jones pickup I’ve been most interested but there’s really little info out there.
Yeah, when I read that they were the most aggressive of the three Jones pups, I was intrigued!

got a warmoth bass a week ago now, and made a few changes to the order because i’m totally clueless, so i’ll expect it by maybe february (in time for my birthday!). walnut body j bass, front route with the 4 holes, j bass maple neck, maple fretboard, vintage style frets, standard profile (unfortunately!!! i wish i had gone with slim taper, but that’s okay. i’m used to a chunky neck, and my hands are pretty big for my age.), with the usual j bass specs. i got it all in a satin finish, going for something really “raw” and simple looking, like a hunk of beautiful wood dressed up to play music with. and me and my father are going to help set it up together, he can wire guitars and he makes guitars from bodies and necks all the time. i’ll definitely be posting pics when it gets here! note, though, hopefully this thing won’t be like 12 pounds or something. maple is heavy, as is walnut, so there’s no telling. but my current 90s p bass i’ve been using and been getting very good on for the past several several months is about 7.8 lb give or take and it feels super light on me. i’m tall!!
