Warmoth Question

Hello all TB'ers,

Been some time since I've frequented this place and realized how much I've also missed it.

My question is in regards to the "sweet spot" location I can have a MM pickup route put in. Is this the same "sweet spot" that EBMM uses on their stingray models or is it positioned closer or further to the neck? I'd love to see some pictures of single MM J's or P's with the "sweet spot" route. After reading reviews and people who've talked to Warmoth directly, the consensus is unknown (at least from my searches) and I've been unable to find pictures here because they show little x's as the pics have been removed. I don't want the route to be too close to the middle of the bass and the "sweet spot" position on EBMM stingrays is just sexy and produces wonderful full tone.

Here are the specs I'm coming up with (this will be a part at a time build and take awhile to complete).

Body:

Deluxe 5 string P-bass
Black Limba body
Unique Choice Figured Walnut top
Tummy and Forearm cuts
Battery Box route
Rear route
Hipshot A string thru route
1/2" side mount jack
MM route in "sweet spot
Clear finish front and back

Neck:
Deluxe 5 inline
Wenge neck
Unique Choice Macassar Ebony fb
1 7/8" nut width
22 frets
No inlays on front
Abalone side dots
Black Corian nut
no finish

Electronics will more than likely end up Delano or Nordstrand with their accompanying two band pre. Controls will be volume/ tone and high/low. Hipshot ultralight tuners will be used and am yet unsure what color the hardware will be.

Thanks a ton and I hope to hear from you all.

Keep in mind the big steel bridge is a big part is the MusicMan tone, Sterling Ball's (owner of MusicMan ) own words. I think the new fender America high mass bridge comes close in tone. I just purchased one from amazon and it is a solid steel bridge like the MusicMan and sounds very close. Good luck with your build!

Thanks for that tid bit, I'll keep that in mind. Warmoth has a few bridge options and out of them I have most use with the hipshot. No use with the badass V that could be routed for. I'd prefer to not have to route it myself.

I understand. I wish they would offer more bridge route options. I really want to get my hands on a aluminum hipshot bridge (just for testing, Lull uses them on his basses an they sound great). I love the schaller roller bridge (which warmoth sells and routes) but I have recently found I like high mass steel bridges like MusicMan and fender offer. The two badass bridges I had were nice enough but they take up a lot of space and not my ideal look for a bridge. I'm sure it will sound great with a hipshot. If you end up not liking the tone you can always have a tech drill holes for a new bridge (covering the existing holes). I have a geddy lee body with three different types of bridge holes, I'm on a quest for the best sounding bridge material. Then again I am a wanna be luthier :) Too me steel offers good sustain and a full range sound. It's also not any heavier compared to brass, which has some of the best sustain but takes some of the full range tone away. All of this is just my opinion ;)

Thanks a lot for your opinion, it's helping make choices that I honestly didn't quite think of, almost every bass I've had has used a different bridge. Have you tried any of the 2TEK stuff? Seems they're made from brass and have more mass than most bridges, the design looks funky to me though... Does it mount from the back of the instrument through a huge route?

I'm by no means a luthier, but would love to give a whack at it some day, I do have the ability to work wood and metal.

I do indeed plan on contacting them soon, I'm just asking here in hope of gaining some knowledge to have a better head about me when I do contact them. Thanks though, everything I've read points to the direction of great customer service.

Anyone have pics of a Warmoth J or P with a MM pickup in the sweet spot?
