Mine has some electrical issues. After a minute of playing it will start to crackle a bit. Seemed odd but I've tested on 3 amps and tried other instruments and it's definitely this one. Bought a multimeter to see if I can sort it out.

No, I don't think mine has that issue (though I have only played it at home, through my Ampeg PF 20-T plugged straight to my computer, so it might be different in a "real" live situation...
This is also just at home. Obvious at low amp levels through speaker and more so in headphones. Off to the shop with it soon. I can't figure it out.

I fell in love with the "Tenor Baritone" as well... I bought it two years ago and it really was a musical extension. I could never deal with six strings and when I started to play this instrument, it opened up new possibilities.
It took quite a while, til I settled on a tuning and now I am simply on BEAD, to make a swap between bass and the tenorbaritone easier. I had bought quite an amount of single strings to try a lot of tunings with the help of the tuning guide from eastwood.
I modified mine a little bit (bone nut, pickguard and goldfoil pickup) and am completely happy with it.
The original two pickups weren't well matched (the bridge mini-humbucker was noticeable lower in level).
Tuning stability is not really good on the deepest string, for whatever reason.
But aside of these minor quirks it is a wonderful instrument.

Great old thread! I'm an elderly bedroom student bassist looking for a 4-string something or other that's higher pitched, since I play more melody than basslines on my standard 34" basses. Something tuned either EADG or BEAD so I won't need to learn new box patterns. This type of short, handy 4-string looks interesting.
So what string gauges did you end up using for BEAD? Any guesses on string gauges if I went for EADG?
I'm too arthritic to grip a pick so it is strictly fingerstyle for me. Is the board and nut wide enough for that?

I went with 64 46 36 26 for BEAD tuning. These are more on the light side. A set of baritone medium as d'Addarios EXL157 will give you more string tension - as you prefer. For a standard guitar tuning EADG I would pick a set of 10s or 11s with wound 3rd. The scale of the eastwood is 26", just a hint longer than standard Fender size. The nut is pretty narrow with 1 5/16", but as the strings are narrower as well, it feels fine for me. I play fingerstyle as well.

In vocal music, a tenor without a high C, or a lyric baritone with a good solid high Bb or even B would in some circles be referred to as a Bari-tenor, a fach all by itself (think the vocal range of Jean valjean in Les Mis).

Could someone who owns an Ellis tenor baritone confirm that the string to string spacing is 16.5mm, or let me know what the string spacing is? It would be very helpful.

I have been unable to locate the calipers I was using to measure but it is definitely less than the Birdsong bass I just got which is 17.5. 16.5 is a reasonable guess and that is definitely a bass bridge. I was looking at their 5-string and they appear to be using a 6-string Gibson? style tailpiece offset which I find a little weird. I guess a custom would be cost prohibitive though.

Bassplace, thank you for your reply. Here is a photo of the the tenor baritone I built. It was basically pieced together from parts I already had. I believe the only items I specifically bought for the build were the bridge and paint. It's tuned in fifths. I'm trying to get it tuned as low as it will go. I think the lowest string is at A now.

Thank you, HaphAsSard. I'm glad you like the design. The body shape is based on a Fernandes guitar called the Vertigo, which is what the model H-65 was later called. I also got the paint idea from this advertisement for the series.
wanted to report back that I think it is just an electrical issue in the room. Guitar and amp are fine at practice. So something different to deal with.
Yeah, I tune my bass CGDA, and I have a 25" ABG tuned an octave up from that, so I kind of think this is made for me too.
