Warrior Club Part 2

Okay guys I've been fooling around with some knob layouts for the new flexcore preamp. I believe I'm going to go with Nordstrand dual coil pups. The knob layout will consist of 2 stacked knobs and 3 regular with 4 switches. Vol, pickup blend, passive tone, treb/bass stack, hi mid/lo mid stack. off/on switch, active/passive, mid frequency, coil tap. If theres anybody in the forum that thinks my knob lay out sucks then by all means let me see what you can come up with. If its better I'll use that lay out. Also please tell me which layout you think is best.

That's a lot of knobs/switches to squeeze into a cavity. Couldn't you do a push/pull volume knob for the active/passive switch? That would take one out of the loop. Should be a lot of versatility in there.

Dude...

1.) Record
2.) De-sparkle
3.) Record

Please. :)

I think you'll find the high end opens up very nicely. It's not gonna' change it to be something it's not, but I think it'll even out the upper profile to be much more to your liking.

Just a prediction... maybe I'll be wrong... save the circuit just in case... but if I'm right... burn it and celebrate its demise over a pint of your favorite whatever. ;)

Just a word or warning for those wanting to rewire their Warrior to STD.
I removed the control access cover to rewire mine last night and low and behold whoever wired it at Warrior decided to cut off the GRN wire that should go to the 1.5K resistor flush with the module (leaving little to nothing to solder to). :rollno:
What's up with that?

Now I've got to decide whether to order a new Bart pre module or live with the "sparkle" circuit.

I'm considering ordering one of the new Pope preamps but at $300 verse $165 I'm probably going to just order another Bart. I typically love the Bart (and I've never heard the Pope).

Bummer!

Sounds like a typical Warrior move. :(. You never know what lurks behind the control cover with them.

Let us know how it turns out.

Sorry to hear that. Mine had just enough exposed to strip and attach a wire too.

I still wish I knew what was going on inside the bart pre to see the effect of leaving the green wire out.

:scowl:

There is just NO GOOD FREAKIN REASON to have done that.

I haven't looked closely at these... any chance at all the module could be opened and a new wire put on?

Otherwise, I'm pretty sure I still actually have a used NTMB preamp, which I'd cut you a great deal on, and you could verify its operation before paying me if you want. I bought it a long time ago for a project that never flew, so I'd love to part with it if it'd get used. It should be perfectly fine. I got it from a TB'er I don't have any reason to suspect for bad stuff.

Joe, welcome to the Warrior Club! :D:scowl:

Unfortunately, that's how they do things. They get 95% of it so right, and leave you scratching your head with the other 5%. I guess since the green wire isn't used in their standard wiring with the sparkle circuit, they figure why not whack it off. Either that, or they try to discourage people from taking that junk out. I asked them to wire my DM5 that you had w/o it, and they wouldn't.

I personally don't buy into the hardline about protecting the factory tone (if that's really what it's all about). That's just a slap in the face IMHO, because there's nothing preventing someone from simply replacing the module to get it done, so it only amounts to a major annoyance... nothing more. Again, if that's really what it's about.

I can understand clean wiring desires, but that can be accomplished and still leave a reasonable segment there.

Anyway, just stupid IMHO.

Vic, that's just me taking a guess. I have no idea what the real reason is, or if there even is one.

Vic,
I really appreciate the offer but I ordered a new preamp from Brian @ Bestbassgear early this morning just after my post. I figured that might help defuse the situation. :)

I will say this though, even without the GRN wire and resistor connected the bass sounds much better. The mids sound much more defined and, maybe it's in my head, but the highs seem much glassier sounding.
I was actually surprised that it still worked but maybe it's the equivalent of the trim pot full up.

Oh well! The overall workmanship on the bass is excellent and it plays really great. The new preamp should totally complete the bass.

Just curious, did you removed only the sparkle control or the extra resistors on the tone pots as well?

I removed only the 2 trim pots and a resistor installed to GND
Yeah, basically what this does is give you the pure unadulterated bart sound, BUT it also equates to a gain trim maxed out, so it'll probably be noticeably louder than any other bass you own, and may even require you to start using pads on your amp inputs. But this is essentially how I found out what the bass was capable of in my case. And since you already have the official solution on the way, it'll be a fairly quick swap and you're good to go.

So you are paying thousand$ for a custom bass, and they won't custom-wire it to your specs??

Not that I was rushing out to drop six grand on a bass, but that is the kinda thing that will send me elsewhere if/when I ever decide to go that route.

Correct.

While I can understand a desire to limit options to protect "the brand", even to the extent of a certain tonal characteristic, I can definitely understand your sentiment, as well.

Just trying to be totally fair.

Did you ever watch "After Hours" with Daniel Boulud? He talks about this concept. Paraphrased, but accurate: "I will make/serve a customer anything they want. If they bring food in, I will prepare it and serve it exactly as they wish." His restaurants are some of the most esteemed in the world, and he loses nothing by serving customers Cheerios if that's what they desire.

What's next? Will Warrior force you to sign a contract that guarantees you'll get no belt buckle rash on 'their' basses? :hiding:

Here a a couple pics of my Warrior. It plays like butter!!

Only if he's a descendent of Frank Lloyd Wright. ;) :D :D
