Warrior Club Part 2

I've heard great things about this preamp and bad. I know that this is the preamp that Alan "Snoop" Evans uses and he loves it! I've only heard it, never played with it. What were your dislikes about it, and how would you describe this preamp to the regular NTMB?
Just kinda' seemed like it was choked a little from the more open sounding preamp when not wired with JD's mods.

Hey Guys.
I got this Warrior a little while ago, I didn't wanna post until the honeymoon was over :D
This is my 6th or so Warrior and my favorite, sounds great in the mix and it's easy to play. Honestly I didn't really liked my other Warriors but I'm loving this one. There's a few minor construction details, the most noticeable are the pickup covers, they are just horrible made!! Looks like they just glued a Buckeye veneer on top of the pickup, I honestly expected more from a company like Warrior but I guess I can live with that....

I hated the 'covers' on my Dran Michael, though I can't stand the look of matching pup covers from any builder. They actually impeded my ability to get the strings getting as low as I wanted, so I bought new Barts.

Sweet Bass and nice video!

My Warrior 5 originally belonged to Andrew Gouche. Had no idea when I bought it and JD told me when I took it to the shop. I emailed Andrew pics to confirm it. Too bad it has to put up with my hack playing now...:)

I know exactly what you mean... I REALLY dig mine, but honestly can't generally recommend the brand in good conscience because JD just doesn't fire on all cylinders with his builds. Far too much hit/miss at this level... BUT... if you get a "good one", they're really great. I just wish JD would go that extra mile and hit the target every time. :hmm:

Oh boy. :p
I have a set of Nordstrand DC6s and a 3 band preamp with tone control, I was gonna sell them but now I want to try them....... Should I?

I'm glad I got one of the good ones, I was ready to give up after the 5th or so :D

Sadly, I find myself in the same boat. I tried really hard to get behind JD, but there were too many issues to overlook. It's sad, because he CAN build with the best of them, but it's RARE that he does. Plus I've witnessed him do a few things that are what I would consider unethical/unprofessional to be honest. :scowl:

All of these points are the exact reason Warrior has never been able to be a truly "successful" company. They have been plagued by the consistency issue since the mid-90's when they started out. Which, to some extent, is to be expected. But, here we are 15 years later and they still can't build a consistent product. And as far as the "unethical/unprofessional" thing goes. I will just leave it at a +1000. Seen it over and over.

But, back to Vic's main point. They CAN build an exceptional product at times. I've owned some of the really good ones. And then I have seen some of their work that would make your hair stand on end!

I have some thoughts as to why this continues to be an issue with them. But, that is something I don't necessarily want to share on a public forum. :smug:

When he nails it they are hard to beat. GLWS.

I was seriously considering purchasing a Warrior for some time, but after reading this very informative thread, I decided to stay away,,,

Too many ''if's' and inconsistencies with their product,,

Thanks to all of you that gave me Great advice via emails and pm's..

This is hilarious...

Last August I had some email exchanges with JD about that "sparkle" circuit he puts in his basses (which I hate, and removed, btw).

I picked up a used 2011 NAMM Warrior 5-string from GC and removed the sparkle circuit this weekend. I will say the green wire that is cut off the preamp was a challenge to strip and extend far enough to solder onto the 5k trim pot. I wired it the same as the NTMB-918FL Bart circuit diagram. The mod has in my opinion given more mid-range growl and at one point with the blend totally on the bridge pickup while I was testing I actually said WOW out loud!. I think it has taken a little of the top end highs away but what I've gained in mid's has totally been worth it. :hyper:

I can offer help and pictures if anyone wants. I also bought extra 5k trim pots and 1.5k ohm resistors. Its fairly easy to do aside from extending the green wire that is cut...

Same here, except that added high end, at least IMHO, was useless. It was up high enough in the "hiss/noise/clack" range I didn't like it anyway. IMHO the native high end in the NTMB with these pickups provides plenty of zing and clarity without being overly "noisy" or "brittle".

But to correct myself, based on the post of someone who got into more detail than I did, the Sparkle is just part of the mod, so I'm starting to simply refer to it as "JD's mods" more generically now. FWIW.
