I certainly dig the idea, I can't see why anyone wouldn't like it. I would think that the hard part would be finding the right strings and getting the setup right...GOOD LUCK!

Heck, I've taken a look at everything from Douglas ($169) to Ibanez ($630) to the Thumb 6'er ($$$$?) to having a custom built for me. Bud LeCompte does excellent work and has made some truly awesome instruments.

I haven't really decided. I am in total love with my Thumb and would LOVE a Thumb 6'er or a custom but reality keeps pointing me to something less expensive.

I dunno man. We'll see.

I think that for a bass player playing 6 string basses the most proper tuning is BEADGC. A string higher than the C string is not functional for a bassist. (unless you enjoy tapping EVERY note you play like Jean Baudin for example. He is someone I admire techniquewise but I don't share his perspective as a BASS player)

I believe the most suitable tuning for bassists is BEADG for 5 string basses(or EADG if you play 4 string basses)

I think your signature should say B-A-C-Bb = Bach.

It was fun for about twenty seconds, until I started missing my low B, and realized that guitar chords just don't sound good on a bass. It depends on what you're doing with it... If you're a bassist, and you play the groove, a 6er tuned like that is a detriment. If you're a guitarist at heart, it might work for you. I personally can't stand that tuning, now that I'm a bass player at heart.

I can see your point if you play 5'ers. I have no desire to. I am very happy with just 4 strings as a bass player.

My interest in becoming a 'ERB'er' is low at this point also. (yeah, yeah...theoretically this and hair splitting that...)

Adding the high B and E like a guitar would be perfect for me since I already play guitar.

Yes. They were designed for Nashville pickers, so they could double on bass in the studio without having to learn a new instrument or get too uncomfortable on a 34" scale.

Anyways, you would need a few different tensions for each string...idk if you like think or thin strings, but if you are serious about setting this bass up PM me and ill tell you what gauge strings you will need.

This is one of the biggest waste of space threads I've seen in a while- there are about two serious replies.

Get a set of strings for a 7 string (you can find a set at Guitar Center for sure) and just throw the B in your storage in case you want it later. Then, string it up and tune it up to EADGBE. Problem solved. The strings will be in the neighborhood of .105-.020. I personally use .095-.018, but they're very light gauge.

IMHO I thought guitar was tuned EADGbe because it it made chord positions more practical (what would I know, I never played guitar).

Thats the only reason I can see why it would be useful for bass, but then again chords sound like garbage on bass.

Really Moog, i think you should go to a store and try it out for a while before you go spending on a 'Wick and some wacky strings mate.

Maybe, sure it'd be fun to play some small guitar riffs and licks on bass, but is that really worth buying a whole new bass and setting it up like guitar?
Can you really see yourself using it for more than just playing the odd guitar tab here and there?
Is it really worth it?

nothing wrong with that, i started on guitar too, and sometimes i miss the standard guitar tuning...check out the jerzy drozd barcelona model, im not sure about the tuning, but it has very tight string spacing and the guy (forget his name) that had it made for him plays a lot of chordal strumming and flamenco style on his bass...i can also understand when you want guitar tuning on a bass and not a guitar...theres a different feeling to bass which i prefer, and the familiar tuning would probably bring forth some fun stuff with a very different vibe to it...try it if that's what you want to do, don't set limits for yourself

The guy playing the jerzy drozd barcelona model (check it out: http://www.jerzydrozdbasses.com/barcelona.htm#) is the amazing CARLES BENAVENT, recongnised as creator of the flamenco bass style, many years ago when he played with Paco de Lucía. I recommend their record "Paco de Lucía Live in America" for a taste of that.

I was lucky enough to see Carles Benavent last thursday at Madrid´s epic place for jazz "Clamores". He was playing the Barcelona 5 string version. I´d say he had an added high string, not a low B... Anyways, this guy plays with a pluck, and can play very fast, like a flamenco guitarist. Nevertheless he´s not a technich freak and he plays from the heart, with guts... But hey... he doesn´t "play in the pocket". He is leader of the band and all the time he does melodic stuff while keeping the groove... if there is groove at all. He played with a percussionist and a HANG dude (hang= new instrument from switzerland that looks like a UFO). It was cool. Still, nothing like the deceased NIELS HENNING ORSTED PEDERSEN (IMHO the best jazz bassist ever).

so.. I´d also like to add a high B to a 5er. Not to play cords, but to find the notes from the chords patrons that I know for guitar... Could it work with a $$ and the mention strings?

Nor really. In German musical notation Bb=B A=A C=C B=H, so Bb-A-C-H=BACH. Bach used this 4 note motif in a lot of his compositions (and so did many other composers, f.e. Stravinsky, as a tribute to him)

I have a six string bass, (commonly referred to as the Bass VI) made by Schecter called the Hellcat VI. It has a short (30 inch) scale, and have specially designed duncan designed pickups. I tune it E A D G C F most of the time, but it is designed for E-E tuning.

What I like about the bass is, the neck isn't extremely wide (I'm only fourteen and my hands aren't quite that big yet ) and also that the bass has a shorter scale, which is good for accomodating the extra high strings. I also have problems with my wrists and not having to deal with that extra reach is really nice.
