That is RIDICULOUS.You are missing out two important aspects of this instrument with that tuning
1 The bass stops being a symetgric instrument (quoting the great Gary Willis)
2 What do you need those xtra strings for if you are a bassist??? (quoting myself)
Wait....so having 2 extra strings means taht you can't use the original 4? Crap. That sucks man.
But hey... he doesn´t "play in the pocket". He is leader of the band and all the time he does melodic stuff while keeping the groove... if there is groove at all. He played with a percussionist and a HANG dude (hang= new instrument from switzerland that looks like a UFO). It was cool. Still, nothing like the deceased NIELS HENNING ORSTED PEDERSEN (IMHO the best jazz bassist ever).
) and also that the bass has a shorter scale, which is good for accomodating the extra high strings. I also have problems with my wrists and not having to deal with that extra reach is really nice.
