Look in the used market. Warwicks are overpriced new, something that's made very (and often painfully) apparent once they hit the used market.

As old as that makes me feel, I think your 1995 comment is pretty accurate. Like many companies, once a certain formula takes off, they often don't really expand or update a whole lot.
The ergonomics are so-so, some not so good, depending on the model. Given the price, I just think there are a lot of basses that are better made, lighter, more flexible, etc.
I have two, and they're complete opposite of each other, so I don't know how one could generalize "Warwicks."
My Corvette $$, I absolutely love. It's a heavier bass, with a thick neck. High output, with a versatile sound, from being muddy to very trebly. But very punchy mids and highs that stick out in the mix.
My Fortress One, is very light, really thin neck with very low action. It's a gorgeous bass, passive, and pushes very strong lows through the mix, but with the EQ on flat, it's mids kind of dissapear compared to the Corvette.
Point is, they're two Warwicks that feel, play, and sound completely different. The Corvette is my main player, and I absolutely love the thing. Picked it up used for under a grand used(can't justify spending what they cost new), and can't see myself getting rid of it, or switching my main bass to another.

I have two german warwicks. My corevette fretless made with a bubinga body is my favorite fretless i've ever played. Encourages me to work out too since the bass is the heaviest I've ever owned.
I bought a 5-string Corvette fretted bass with ash body because I loved my fretless so much. It will be hitting the market again at some point. Just never really fell in love with that axe. I actually like the neck on it, and the sound is good. That being said I just can't bond with it. It's just not "me".
