Was Bass your first instrument?

I played acoustic guitar before I played bass. I couldn't imagine picking up a bass with no musical experince or no prior string instrument experince.

So was bass your first music instrument or did you come from a prior bacground on another instrument?

I learned piano first. Then guitar and bass at the same time. I always prefered bass to guitar.

Played alto sax from 5th grade to 7th, then baritone sax from 8th to 11th. Started playing playing bass around the 10th grade. Playing the Bari helped a lot.

I played piano first, then fell out of that. Then I discovered Metallica and Cliff Burton, and wanted to play bass. Then I got to college and tried to learn guitar, but decided that bass fit me better after all. The rest is my story.

Played that for around 4 years, then got my first bass.
What a change it was, totally unexpected, but I stuck with it and now I'm a fairly good bassist (i think! )

You went backwards from me

I find bass and guitar compliment each other. Bass hass made me stronger and given me more finger independance. Guitar has made me faster and more coordinated.

No, played viola from 4-6 grade, "drums" (snare drum) in 7th grade, and then bass in 8th grade plus. Was so bummed to play "drums" and get a single drum. I wanted a kit so bad.

Turning 27 this year. But to answer the actual question, I suppose recorder was my first instrument.

NO WAY! I learnt Euphonium at the same time as bass! I thought I was the only Euphonium player in the entire world
I learnt drums for a half a year and guitar for a month before I picked up bass.

Started on clarinet, aged 12. Added alto sax at 16. Picked up acoustic guitar at 19, adding electric (12-string at first!) at 21. Ditched the clarinet and sax a year later and was just guitars until I picked up a bass aged around 34 and got hooked. I now (at 38) play acoustic, electric and bass guitars, a bit of keys (dusting off some vague classroom memories from 20+ years ago) and added mandolin to my repertoire a couple of months ago.
