I always like seeing someone get into the bass. One of the guys that I jam with has a teenage son who is also a guitarist. I can tell when he watches us jam that he's getting the bass bug. We covered RHCP's version of Higher Ground and he was trying to squeeze the bass line out of his guitar (good luck with that).

Anyway I bet within a year he's a bass player.

I first heard Archie Bell and The Drells doing the tune The Tighten Up, and I was sold. I started on electric bass, 1970, then guitar and piano, only to understand music better and then moved to upright bass in 1991. 20-years after I started on the electric bass.

I am primarily a jazz guitarist, but I have played bass off and on for 20 years. Played it a bunch in bands in the past, and love just focusing on the groove as a change from cerebral jazz playing.

Piano, violin, drums, guitar... I took up bass for the same reason as a lot of other bassists: there were already a million guitarists and nobody wanted to play the bass. So I took it up reluctantly and got good by accident. Oops!

Anyway, yes I was always a bassist, and always will be. I'm trying to dabble in other instruments now, trying to get some piano knowledge in, but primarily bass and I don't see that ever changing.

When playing with others, mostly a regular group of musicians in one form or another, I play Bass.

I absolutely love playing Bass in the group setting.

Funny story:

When I was little I always thought the bass parts were on the drums. So I got a drum set. It didn't take me long to figure out that those parts weren't on the drums. It also didn't take me long to get a bass.

So I guess no. I wasn't always a bassist. I was a drummer by accident for a while.

I'm a guitar player and I took home a bass because I wanted to record a bass part on a song I was working on. I found it facinating and 4 yearls later bought a better bass (Sr800) and got serious about reading bass clef and playing. That was '91, played in a few bands as a bass player, and after a 12 year layoff from bands (kids, etc) and recording only in my home studio, I'm now in a band since last August as the bass player and I mostly plass bass now. I absolutely love playing the bass and I wish I had done this sooner.

As for me: I started on the bass, then 6 months later i picked up the guitar. I took two years of bass lessons ( Now wishing I didn't stop, but I really hit a plateau technically). I've been in some bands playing bass, and others guitar. Also somewhere along the line I picked up piano/ keyboard and drums. But lately it seems I've been getting more back into bass (thanks talkbass, but no thanks on the GAS).

started out with piano, then learned trombone in band.
then i moved on to tuba, bassoon, and then bass guitar.
i've currently been playing bass for about 5 years and it remains my favorite instrument.. no guitar for me.

now hopefully i'll find a way to somehow obtain an upright...

Nope, played guitar for 20 years. Did some bass stuff in between, but I'm trying to make more of a full go at it this time around. I feel a bit "bored" with guitar these days, and there seems to be more of a call around here for good bassists that can sing. The score writing for my web series (PEDS) has really expanded my appreciation and knowledge for bass playing, so I think I have a tendency NOT to sound like a guitarist trying to play bass. I hope.

I've got a similar story:

Tried guitar at first when I was 12, and noticed that I liked the low E string and tried to copy the bass lines of the songs I listened to. Realized that it really was a bass guitar that I was hearing and got into bass. I can now play acoustic and electric guitar, but my first and main love has and always will be bass.

So I guess I was a guitar player by mistake who was really a bass player.
