Washington Redskins name

Of course I can. But I have not yet been convinced. I will listen to arguments, but I will not accept any denegrating comments about my position.
Oh, and the government will come after you. Do some research on the IRS "phony" scandal. You wont find it on the major broadcast channels.
What will convince you that Native Americans find it offensive, since apparently Native Americans saying they find it offensive doesn't?

Good example of the conservative fear machine in action though.

There are none so blind as those who refuse to see.

Real people, who are Native Americans are offended that there is an NFL Football Team named after a racist slur that was often used before either discriminating against, or peforming genocide against people of their heritage.

That is a fact, and denying it is simply expressing a desire to remain ignorant.

It is NOT an opinion, any more than having an opinion that water is not wet.

Well, if the numerous citations and links presented in this thread aren't enough to convince you...Here's a link to a website established by the Oneida Nation. It lists dozens of Native American organizations that oppose the name. This should be enough to satisfy your need for the Native American perspective. It really should...

I think it's typical of the reprehensible attitudes all too often displayed in organized professional/college sports that foster a "it's always been that way" or "because we say so" attitude. Native Americans have a long history of being beaten, raped, killed, sacked and pillaged in this country with nothing more to show for their suffering than unfarmable plots of land and some lousy casinos. If they are requesting a name change, in all fairness, I don't think it's that unreasonable that a multimillion dollar corporation with a dated, racist name do the right thing and change it. You don't see a Minnesota Blacks or Miami Brownskins, do you? I'm not big on knee jerk political correctness, but the name is stupid and I'd be happy to see it go, even if only as a punishment for the ignorance and arrogance of so proudly wearing it all these years.

Brings to mind when certain students at Penn State started flipping over cars and lighting fires in protest over canning someone who protected a known pedophile. Go team.

Is it? I know Susan Harjo and her crew, changethemascot.org and the like say they are offended but are they really offended? Or is "the man" just telling them to be offended? Honestly, don't we know better than actual Natives what is and is not respectful to Natives? Is it not our responsibility to tell these folks, "No, it's OK. This team name is not harmful to you in the least. Pay no attention to this liberal PC hippie nonsense. If any white guys or young Natives attach themselves to your cause in any way, shape or form, it is a sign that it is not an actual problem. Just made up. These are not the droids you are looking for. Trust us, we settlers know better than you natives how to deal with you respectfully."

At first, this post frightened me. Then, slowly, it began dawning on me that there could be some use of irony here. Then I felt a little better. I'm considering coming out from under this desk, although, hey, is that an M&M?

26 tribes out of 566? 5% of the tribes in the U.S. seems hardly a majority. I will need something more convincing than that.

Fear machine? Did you invent that?
Somebody else sent me a site showing all the tribes opposing it. It was 26 tribes out of 566 tribes. 5% is not a consensus by a long shot.

Dude. You are currently arguing for a CONSENSUS.

Why?

Is there a point to that sort of thing? We need to poll every single person with Native American blood, and arrive at a number over 50%, or there simply are no Native Americans who are offended by the name?

You are choosing not to take offense.

I'm as Scottish as a guy could be, without wearing a kilt and drinking Glenlivet while punching a guy, and I am offended by the name. I am offended on the grounds that I am a HUMAN BEING, and I don't particularly like it when a pro sports team in America is named after a racial slur.

I am FOR Political Correctness, to a point.

But so is EVERYBODY. It only depends on what they find offensive.

I could post ten potential team names that would offend YOU, but they would delete the post, and send me a warning, or ban me.

So instead of offending People who might complain, offend animals that can't?
Seriously, you haven't deleted this? Aren't you embarrassed by the utter ridiculousness of this post?
I am not aware of the native americans that are offended. Could it be that white social activists convinced them they should be offended?

Nice job of moving the goalposts.
