Sad Story

I heard about that. Horrible.

Still no power back home and cell service comes and goes. I get text from my son every once and a while telling me they are fine. Wife hears from her parents now and again they are fine too. City water is back on, but need to boil before use. I could probably get to them now, but with no power there is really nothing useful I could assist with.

Mrs. Radioactive and I were planning to ride the storm out but changed our minds Friday night and we packed up all the important things we could fit into our cars and we headed to Florida.

Our landlord is our friend and he evacuated with us. He has been getting reports from his people that decided to stay and so far it would like we did not suffer any serious damage. Were going to lose what is in our fridge but other than that we have done ok. My job is giving us disaster pay for the day that we have been closed so I have been pretty lucky.

Others have not. Two of my coworkers have had structural damage to their homes. If you have the ability to donate money there are several organizations that are helping with storm relief.

Ida was so powerful it reversed the flow of the Mississippi River
A U.S. Geological Survey gauge at Belle Chasse, south of New Orleans, detected the Mississippi's flow moving backward around midday Sunday because of the amount of water Ida whipped up. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers spokesman Ricky Boyette confirmed engineers detected a "negative flow" on the Mississippi River as a result of storm surge. Although rare, the river changing course is not unprecedented, occurring during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Isaac in 2012.

"I remember, off hand, that there was some flow reversal of the Mississippi River during Hurricane Katrina, but it is extremely uncommon," Scott Perrien, a UDGS hydrologist, told CNN.

More good news for you.

Most of my family is back in Houma and the surrounding area. Got four friends (so far) that got roofs taken off. My parents and sister have minimal damage. Finally got to actually talk to my dad today and his reports is it is really bad around them in Bourg. My brothers and I live in Houston. We are standing by to make a supply run if needed.

My in-laws are in Metairie. They did not have any damage that they can tell.

Yes donations would be greatly helpful to the area if you can.

Entergy to New Orleans City Council: First power to city may come online as soon as Wednesday

Much about the plan to restore power was unclear Tuesday afternoon, but it was widely expected that even if power was restored to hospitals, the Sewerage & Water Board and other critical needs in the city soon, it would take far longer for average residents and businesses to be able to turn on their lights and their air conditioning.

Yeah a friend lives near Boston. His whole building had evacuated to the basement last night a little after midnight due to tornadoes in the area.

Last text I got from him at nearly 2 a.m. was "I brought beer and soda so I'm popular." If you knew him you wouldn't be surprised.

My dad made a round trip from Houma to Houston to pick up building supplies. My in-laws are still holding out in Metairie. I am waiting for the call they had enough and go get them.

Power back from my in-laws and middle kid. Still no power for my parents. Power is coming back in parts of Houma so hopefully it will get to my parents soon so they can quit running off a generator. The home of a family friend burnt down last week. Suspect a portable generator issue.

It was mind in my area. Some rain and a little more windy than a normal shower.
