wax under the poly? (Affinity content)

I stripped the paint of my old (circa 2000-2001) Affinity "P" with a paint scraper and noticed that the body is covered with a waxy/soapy substance underneath. Any idea of what this may be? Would it be hazardous to sand off?

Also, what would be a good finish to apply on top of this mystery goop? I was thinking of dyeing it black + lacquer or varnish, but not sure if it will take...

It is most likely sanding sealer. It is a shellac. Are you sure you are ready to do this?

That's the poly sealer coat. On todays poly finish the color coat is pretty thin. Under that is the nearly indestructible poly sealer coat of legend. Usually pretty thick and very strong. Sanding by hand will take forever and a day. Using a hand sander and 60 grit sandpaper will take much less time, but still alot of work. I use a heat gun and scraper when peeling poly. Takes me about 20 minutes.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll try scrapping what's scrapable, and then will sand it off if possible.

I thought my work was done once the paint was removed, silly me...
