Ways to save money that you know.

Ahhh you cheapskates are ruining the economy!!!

It's okay, I'm a major cheapskate as well...

You forgot to add "Download music and movies instead of paying for them at the store" :)

HUGE ones that nobody seems to mention.

* When expenses decrease, act as if they haven't. For instance, an accident came off my driving record as of the last insurance term, dropping monthly premiums by $125 (I don't get any special bonus for paying the whole term at once). I however acted like I always did in terms of budgeting, and 5 months later I had $650 I didn't need in my bill-paying account.

This is the one thing that I have noticed that a good bit of people have trouble with. The wife had a hard time with this concept right after we paid off her car. She could just see the extra money each month and forgot that we were fine each month before the car was paid off.

Uhh.. how is that supposed to save money?

It's easier to make a right turn. Making a left turn usually means idling while you wait for the light or a break in traffic, which means you're getting 0 MPG while you wait. Also, as mentioned above, making a left turn usually means accelerating faster to make it across oncoming traffic.

UPS has developed a route system that minimizes left turns and they've saved a ton of gas and money. Invalid Link Removed

Well, the reason it worked was because I separate bill money from food/gas/discretionary money by split-depositing paychecks into two accounts, then I pretty much forget about the bill-paying account as all but one of my bills are paid automatically. That makes it easy for the extra funds to build up.

* NEVER leave your amp, stereo system, or other sound equipment on when not using it. Amplification equipment is the absolute biggest watt hog in your house. Why? Because it always, ALWAYS, draws its rated INPUT wattage when it's on, no matter if it's being played or what its volume is set at. The power not being used is wasted by running it through an attenuator (resistor) that converts it to heat, very inefficiently. You may think "oh, it's only a 300-watt amp". Think again. Your average 300w stack actually draws between 600 and 800w from the wall (laws of thermodynamics and all that; no system is 100% efficient and amplification systems are relatively inefficient). Leave it on for an hour when not using it and you might as well take a dollar from your wallet and put it in the electric bill fund.
I'm sorry but this is just not true. I'll avoid getting into technical stuff, but I'll give you an example. I have a QSC PLX2402 in my rack. I plug into regular 15 A circuits all the time. If my QSC amp which is rated at 2400 W is really drawing 2400 W continuously I would be blowing 15A circuit breakers almost as soon as I turn the amp on.

That said, you are correct it is a good idea to turn off stuff that is not being used since there is power being wasted there.

Take better care of your teeth and gums. Not only will it save your teeth, it saves on dental bills, especially the major work. And, will pretty much eliminate bad breath. DO NOT go to sleep w/o taking care of your teeth. Sleeping with rotting food in your mouth is not only bad for your teeth/gums, it's bad for your general health.

Here's my system. (Note: If your gums aren't pink like a baby's, you probably have dental problems that haven't been taken care of and are causing problems you just don't know yet)

I came up with a 6 step process for keeping my teeth/gums in as close to perfect as you can get at home. No visible plaque anywhere and no bad breath. Haven't had a cavity in years. Also saved over $400 because no deep cleaning was needed.

I follow these steps every night.

Note: as I started doing all these things, my gums bled each time until all the irritants were removed from around and below my gums. It maybe a week or 10 days. I didn't get discouraged. This dissipated with regular usage.
If you miss a day or two, the bleeding may come back (as mine did) because your gums are being irritated by plaque.

You ask, what is plaque? It is the biofilm created by microorganisms in our mouth. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dental_plaque

Steps to better dental hygiene.
------------------------------
1) dental brushes (not a tooth brush) Use if you have spaces between your teeth.
2) regular floss
3) electric flosser ( I use WaterPick Power Flosser - this is not a water jet type product.) Check it out. It cleans below the gum line to help reduce/prevent gum disease. It takes a bit of practice to use it but it's the best thing I've done recently for my dental care. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
4) stainless steel dental pick for between teeth that are close together and where plaque builds up, especially in back of the front lower teeth.
5) Pickup one the new ultra-hi-speed rotary tooth brushes (not the $5 kind - I use Oral B Professional.)I use this as the last step before using mouthwash. Link Removed)
You can also use it to brush your tongue. I use Crest Pro-health tooth paste. I also suggest you keep a tooth brush at work so you can brush/floss your teeth after lunch.
6) mouth wash - I use Crest Pro-Health.

One thing I did learn was that you should not use whitening mouth wash before you go to sleep. Use it before you brush your teeth but not on its own. I read that it can damage your teeth. I had many dental problems while using it and that cleared up after I stopped using it.

Disclaimer: YMMV, I am not a dentist just an experienced dental patient. All these items are over the counter. Check all this out with a professional if you have any questions. I suggest getting your teeth cleaned and checked out so you can start fresh with the above.

Wash your car in the rain.
Use coffee grounds to fertilize your plants. Water your plants with old coffee.
Use grass clippings to fertilize your grass.
Use Gel Soap in the shower and at the sink to reduce soap scum/decrease cleaning time.
Increase the deductibles on your car insurance. Make sure you can cover it, if needed.

Make a shopping list for when you go to the grocery store.
The list is what you need, not what looks good. If you shop
at random, you will spend twice as much as you should.

Another point on grocery shopping......eat before you go. If you hit the grocery store hungry, chances are you will come home with all kinds of items you never intended on buying.

Dr. Oz one time said to only shop around the outer edges of the grocery store. Most all items down the aisles aren't all that good for you anyway. Not universally true I realize, but you get the point....well, most of you will. :D
