No. I've just been thinkin that a lot of bassists aren't really recognized. I mean. I could be just as famous as James Hetfield and play a gig with him, but I wouldn't be as recognized as him. Did you know that him and I are alike in the fact that we both play piano and bass, and sing, but he also plays the guitar and drums.
Maybe I've just been spoiled by being in bands with multi-instrumentalists, but I've never had a problem being looked down on or pushed aside whenever I play bass because everyone generally has an understanding of what each instrument adds to a mix.
As far as what the audience or general public thinks about the role of the bass guitar, you're probably better off just playing as best as you can and not worrying about that kind of stuff.
These kinds of discussions always involve people being a "bass player" or a "bassist," but never what they really are: a "musician..."

If you're a solo act, your post to start this thread makes no sense. How can the guitarist (which you don't have) and the singer (which is you) get more credit than the bassist (which is also you)??

Bass being dominant, second only to the singer? Heaven forbid! Bass is a support instrument. We dont need no stinking recognition anyway. If your ego is so frail it needs stroking by everyone who hears you play, you're playing the wrong instrument.

There may be more than one guitarist in a band. That's normal. But NORMALLY there's only ONE bass player. So I don't think Bassist is second to guitarists or anyone in the band. All are equal.
First I don't think that I as a bassist or bassissts are underappreciated.
Good bassist always appreciated! So we work hard to be good.
Good guitarists too are appreciated, bad guitarists not.
Soundwise, I don't understand by what you mean dominant. In a song with vocal of course the vocalist is on the front mix cause it brings the MELODY.
In an instrumental song, any instrument that carry the melody will be on the front mix too.. And if that's bass, then it'll be on the front.
But no matter what's on the front, IMO Bass Sound will always be dominantly along the song IN IT's FREQUENCY SLOT (normally Low Frequencies). And it's very commanding. Kind of a cool/calm/silent leader of the song/band. It dictate what chord the Band play by just changing ONE note.
For example if the band play chord C Major, you can play Root, 3rd, 5th or other passing note/really 'outside' note and you know it can dramatically change, not just the chord, but also the overall mood of the song. And if done tastefully.... Well listen to The Beatles songs man..
Lot of people KNOW the GOOD bassist name.
But if you're not good, it doesn't matter whether you play bass or guitar or sing, people will not interested to know more about you.
Once again, if you're a Good Bassist, people will respect you. But if you're not, don't expect much.
It's the same with Guitarists. if they're good then they'll get respect but if not they will not get it too.
Lastly, THERE ARE MANY kids that want to be Bass Player. You just don't know it man.. You really have no idea...
Ok man I mean no offence to you, I try to understand your point,.. but at the end I just wanna say to you to view it from the brighter attitude.
No matter how good you play, when you have bad attitude on it, you do not respect your self. And if you don't respect yourself, None other will...
I've only heard one band that has more then one bass player, but I can't remember the name of said band.
I can't remember. I stopped paying attention to them about 4 years ago. They got boring to watch. All I remember is that they had a music video after every episode.
In my last band I seemed to get more attention from everyone then the guitarist. But he was a complete tool. He thought he was gods gift to guitar... He really wasnt I had better chops on guitar. We switched once at practice even the drummer and the guitarists girlfriend said I was better then him. I think I attract attention because I go wireless and start pits and get the crowd going... all he would do is stop in the middle of the song to drink his beer. I threw a beer can at his face when he did that once ha he wasnt happy about that one but thats what you get for stopping in the middle of the song.
