The company may not do well by the employees, but if a small number of people (which TB is in reality) boycott it will only hurt the workers. The workers need to organize and get it together. I rarely buy new from GC, but their used selection online is great. Would suck if I lost that. I rarely have issues with GC, just that one employee who seems to think he knows it all, but then proceeds to hook up gear incorrectly. Overall, I like GC, but if they treat employees poorly, employees should fight back.
Have one about a mile from my house. Haven't been in it for at least 2 or 3 years. The only things I've bought there was an ESP B5-JR, a set of strings and a Xmas special they had on some powered monitor speakers that turned out to be junk.
Had to drive to KC to get my Fender Modern Player Short Scale Jazz bass from one, as it was the only place that had one left. And their customer service (purely a generic term) was incredibly bad, even by their standards.

I didn't see the actual agreement so I can't comment on it. Employees are covered by state and federal laws so regardless of any agreement not too sue for unpaid wages you can still reclaim unpaid wages via the court system.
This is a preemptive strike against the union. I really don't see why GC employees need to be unionized. It's a retail job. If you work at the dist center then its a warehouse job. There are plenty other retail/warehouse jobs in the country if one doesnt like these.

Wow. I just read the article. While clearly an underhanded thing to do, there is SOOOOO much worse stuff going on in other workplaces. And so many much more important places than GC. The NYC public school system is doing much MUCH worse things to it's employees. I get screwed over way worse than any of those guys do. Been working for 20 years in the same place, and I put in 46 to sometimes over 50 hours a week, yet get no medical benefits. Yep. That's illegal, but the DOE gets away with it. I also am required to pay union dues which averages out to about $60 a month. Yet the union does absolutely nothing for me whatsoever and I get none of the union benefits other teachers get (I'm a substitute). I can opt out of the union, but I'd have to pay an agency fee that is the same amount of money. Quitting the union would be hurtful in other ways too lengthy to get into here. That's just 2 of the ways I'm getting screwed over... How about the fact that if a student makes an accusation against me, I'll lose my job. Period. I don't have to do anything at all. I've seen it happen. Or if a student hits me and I defend myself, it's pretty much a guarantee that I'll lose my job. I could write a nice long essay about this, and this isn't even touching on what the regular full time teachers now have to deal with.

Man Hermes is pretty bad or at least that has been my experience with them unfortunately which is too bad. Maybe GC has something to do with it, idk.
Yeah, GC isn't going to take much of a hit for this, because -every- company is doing it now. Employees quit over it? Well, they won't be able to find a new job where they don't have to sign a similar arbitration contract as a condition of being hired.
It really hurts consumers, too- especially when dealing with services that are essentially a local monopoly. Need high speed internet? Only one company offers it in your area, and their service contract includes an arbitration clause. So it's either take it and have no real recourse to sue if their service is shoddy, or go without internet service- not an option if you need to work from home on occassion, as so many of us need to do these days.

Buy local and used. Tons of great deals and great stuff on the used market. It's been years if not a whole decade without buying brand new in stores. I know some people prefer to buy brand new and that's their business, but with the gear that's out there, bought on impulse then realizing it's not for them... Man, used is the way to go. With patience and a bit of negotiating skills you could get some fancy stuff for a lot less.
So even here in Canada, encouraging any big name stores is not the way to go for me.
Oh, I always look for local used deals first. However, you are in Montreal, while I am in Prince George, BC (pop: +/- 80, 000)...I'm pretty sure you have a bigger selection of local used stuff than I do...
And as far as a particular Godin model (Shifter Classic 4) that I'm lusting for goes, it's practically impossible to find NEW, never mind used. I have run searches all across Canada on the Long & McQuade website out of sheer curiosity...ZERO hits...in fact, I think the only store I have found in Canada that has (had?) the exact version of the model I was looking for (black finish, maple board) was Steve's Music in Toronto.
There is a Long & McQuade here in town, and a mom n' pop that also sells Godin stuff, and I know that I could theoretically walk in to either one and order this bass, but it'd be kinda nice if one or the other had it hanging on the wall for me to try out...

I'm afraid I lack the moral fiber to boycott an establishment where I enjoy shopping, for whatever reason.
Some of my former classmates have enlightened me as to why I should boycott Walmart, but it's just so damn convenient.
I guess I shouldn't complain that so many of their workers are getting benefits in order to make due.

Agreed, although I am not comfortable ordering an instrument - like a bass or a guitar - over the internet. Pedals, cables, small stuff is different, but instruments, not for me. I need to spend a bit of time with it before forking the cash, feel it, see if somekind of magic happens. I know most stores have some return policy - L&M has a good one - but the hassle of re-packing it, sending it back, ugh... Maybe I'm just an old dude yelling at clouds but I'm probably a bit old fashioned, need to put my paws on it before giving those pesos.

I've never paid through my nose.
I've ordered items, received them, and driven them right back to GC the next day, and sometimes even the same day.
No packing required.
You are out the cost of shipping though, unless it was defective. It used to not be a big deal, but lately their shipping fees are kind of high.
Cheese melts when it gets hot, the sizzle, the smell, just gotta jam it in. That feeling when the roof of your mouth gets burned, and you got that little piece of skin hanging down for awhile. Gonna keep my mouth shut on this one, and see what the leftovers look like.
Well I'm happy it does work out for you, but me, nah, I'll keep on getting stuff I can spend time with before. And used.
