Wear your own shirt?

I try not to wear t-shirts onstage, but as always, it depends. I also try not to wear Depends on stage, but as always...

So I need some help settling a disagreement. My bandmates are divided on whether or not it is acceptable to wear your own band's t-shirt at a gig. We are pretty evenly split on it, two for, two against, one who doesn't care. Keeping in mind that wearing a t-shirt at a gig is the norm, what are your thoughts?

Tacky. We've had shirts made for ourselves TWICE. Every time we wore them on stage I had unshakable douche chills.

Best gig uniform I've had was just wore button up shirts and black pants for a wedding. Felt great.

For the shirt thing; IMO if you are comfortable with it wear it and if not don't. I have on occasion over the years worn my own bands T on stage and the universe did not implode. What always gave me a chuckle was the inevitable "are you in the band?" Q from a buzzed cutie.

Different bands, different gigs, as long as it is a tee friendly gig who cares.

I would not wear any bands shirt on stage, however, if I did it would be my own.

My fav drummer wears his pet Slipknot tee to all of our gigs. We play country.

The common local terminology for someone who wears their own band shirt is a "T Shirt Tony", after a drummer who did this and was of course fired.

Best shirt for metal?

Don't all metal bands wear black t-shirts with a jagged lettering for the logo and a skeleton with red eyes on the front? It seems like the aesthetic is more important than the name on the shirt.

P.S. I play in a country band and wear hat, belt buckle and boots onstage. I'm a city boy who works in IT.

Wearing your own bands shirt on stage is just about the cheesiest thing you can do.

Do you ever see any professional touring bands doing that?

Pics in the thread indicate "yes."
However, I was raised to believe that you don't do it. In fact, it was considered a dork move for an audience member to wear a band shirt for the band they were going to see that night. I'm not sure where this rule came from, but it is as old as time itself. Going to see Ozzy? Better wear a Slayer shirt.
