Wearing hats while playing; yes or no?

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous [BG]' started by Fender_Bender, Jan 7, 2018.

  1. Do you wear a hat while playing?. The right hat on the right person looks great. I personally can’t stand anything on my head, but do sometimes wonder what would be a cool hat to wear.
I’ve always liked the look of a bowler hat like Stan Laurel wore, but I’m not going to shell out that kind of dough if I was too embarrassed to wear it. Not to mention it would have to be the right sort of band/gig.
My hair’s gone on permanent vacation :bawl:, so if I’m outdoors in the summer I have no choice but to wear a ball cap to keep from frying.

Not having a lot of hair I will wear a hat when playing outdoors if there is blazing sun, not that it happens often in the UK as there is more danger of the gear getting wet.
  4. Just realized I spelled nay wrong lol :bored:.

  7. I go naked around the house for 4 months a year so I’m not the guy to answer that one :cautious:. Can’t stand pyjamas either.
  8. Looks cool. I think it’s a look that is best with long hair though. If I was outside, going hatless would not be an option (think Curly from the 3 stooges).

Yep. Many, including Roy Wood, rocked a topper long before Slash.

i don't wear hats/caps except in the direst circumstances ( :)). but i see hats and other 'head gear' which look cool to me. hats which are out of the ordinary have the most appeal to me. i would consider a sombrero under the right circumstances.

My bandleader/lead singer always wears a hat, mainly because he has no hair on his head. One night the venue was ridiculously warm and he took it off for a set. Then he asked if I'd turned up because now he couldn't hear himself in the monitors. I hadn't. He finally realized that the brim of the hat was like a personal monitor enhancer. He never takes the hat off now.

I wear hats 99% of the time when I leave the house so I don't get sunburn on my mostly bald head. I sometimes take them off during gigs when it gets too hot.

But they've saved me at gigs too, when the stage lights are aimed badly and would be hitting me right in the eyes otherwise. I used to play one bar regularly where if I didn't wear some kind of hat with a brim I couldn't see 2 feet in front of me. So pedals, set list, edge of the stage, etc were a problem.
