website and social media

If you're trying to appeal to older folks (30 or 35+ depending on what area of the country you're in) Facebook is still relevant and very much worth your time. It's an easy way to keep your events organized and in one place. I would caution against paying for ads on Facebook because they are pretty unscrupulous about who they show the ad to, and may totally miss the crowd you're going for.
I'm having good success with targeted ads on Facebook. If you don't know how to target your ads, you'll waste a lot of money. But my ads are targeted to adults 21 and over in my local region who like music. This eliminates people who are too young to hang in the club I'm playing and who won't be interested in music at all.

We normally boost our attendance to way above average for the room we typically play. There are always people there who pull me aside on a break and tell me they saw our ad. One time a guy had seen our ad and watched the video we posted with it and decided to bring a whole group to our show to celebrate his birthday.

If you dig into the ad function you'll find it can be tailored to your needs to an extent. That said, ANY advertisement has to cast a wide net in order to gain the attention of the people you want. If you want 50 people you need to reach 5000. That's always been how advertising works.
