weed and you bass playing

It doesn't mix with playing, never has... That's actually why I hated it in high school. I used to have a beer or two at rehearsal or before shows, but I don't even do that anymore, I enjoy playing way more when I feel like I'm completely on point.

playing in any altered state seemed semi interesting if the majority of the band/audience was also ..!? but that's what i sorta remember from the 70's .. !??? the 80's seemed more coke induced , which usually caused a race to see who could finish the song first .. ! the 90's , pushing 40 by then and needed to step of the gas a bit .. ! = behave

now , i'll sip a little bit of Black Berry Brandy ( Vicks formula 44 ) for the old vocal chords .. !!

Weed used to help on nights of playing with very basic 1-4-5 blues bands. It also helped me lock into a groove and stay there.



Stopped doing it in January because it doesn't like my blood pressure meds. It may make you foget you "r's" too."

You may think you are learning and remembering but in reality cannabis effects your memory, and not in a positive way.

I think it is different for everyone. everyone's body chemistry is different. I can burn all night and have zero issues with anything. I know a lot of people who can't. I was working with an old blues man for a while and after a gig he turned to the drummer and said you can never smoke on a gig or rehearsal again or you are fired. then turned and pointed at me and said I don't give a F what you do you have never had a problem.....

but I can't even sip any booze or my timing and thinking go to hell. I will literally be in the middle of a song and think what tune even is this? so booze is bad and the other not so much to me. now I know a few guitarists that booze like crazy and don't understand how they can play so well so juiced up.

I found out the hard way that me and weed don't match. Crashed pretty hard a few times I did partake (as in circulatory collapse with some mild hallucogenic effects).

Playing on that stuff? Unfathomable for me personally. I wouldn't even be able to get up on stage...

It has its uses and I've played with guys who most assuredly had no problem with it AT ALL, but personally, I've got no use for it.

I like the bass player for Sleep & Om....he says he can tell in 5 seconds if a riff has "legs" or not. I tend to agree.

I notice that I play differently. With alcohol I always lean towards playing "bangers".

Smoking dope will not enhance my abilities. Haven't touched it (or tobacco) in 35 years. I like to think a glass of red wine with my din couldn't hurt.

I’ve played with people who have performed better in whatever “state of mind” as when they rehearsed. One guy rehearsed high and played high, he sounded fine. He was off when he was sober.

I prefer to be as close to sober as possible. An altered state of mind, on occasion, can lead to some creativity but for the most part is a hindrance, for me.

If you use weed does it effect your bass playing in a positive or negative way?
For me it really helps when I am learning theory and practicing scales arpeggios etc. I am more into it and feel more aware of what is happening. But playing cover songs for some reason it messes me up. I forget certain parts, loose focus and generally do not play as good.
Just wondering how it effects you?

Not good for me but that's more of a statement about the role of my chosen instrument and the type of music I play. If I were an improvisational bebop alto saxophonist it might just work out fine.

From a BL’s point of view, I’ve read a Zappa quote that’s along the lines of “selling a ticket is entering into a contract with the audience and it’s hard to fulfil that contract if you’re in jail”, I believe his attitude was do what you’ve got to do on your own time but don’t wreck it for me, your band-mates or the crowd when you’re on the clock. Wise man.

I've never had any issues playing or remembering songs while under the influence of cannabis.

This echoes my experience, and it shows how different individual reactions are. People learn compensate for Alzheimer's Disease 20 years before symptoms appear and the same is true for cannabis intoxication. I'd never recommend a young person use it when top motor function and sharpness is needed, but for a 71 year ole everyday morning toker, that's his mileau.

Here's the difference between weed and booze: after over 200,000 years of on and off use we have built in canaboid receptors in our brain cells and that's the avenue weed uses to effect you. Alcohol that came by accident with learning how to store grains in a hole in the ground 10,000 years ago, poisonously blocks oxygen from getting to your brain cells, so you are killing brain cells to get 'er done.

Well we at least know it affects your thread titling: “weed and YOU bass playing.”

I remember reading a scientific article about THC’s effect on the brain and body. This article claimed that the effects were trivial and mostly up to the user. So it basically is an all purpose placebo.

We ingest enough chemicals without knowing it, so why consciously ingest more with no health benefit?

Of all the people that I know are chronic users for their whole lives, it seems it never has a positive effect. But maybe you have different experiences.
