weight on cabinets

i recently bought a epiphani 2x10 and i love it. sounds amazing and its super light. But thats part of my problem. I feel like if i put my heavy rack on top of my epiphani it wil damage it or even break it. Has anyone had any experiences with damaging a cabinet from puting too much on top. I just love the cab and dont want to hurt it.

That's the most ridiculous thing I've read all week. The weight savings in almost all newer lightweight bass cabs is because of the switch to neodymium magnets. The wood is pretty much the same wood the cab makers have been using all along. I suspect no cabinet maker worth a damn choses woods based on how much it will take to physically support the speakers. It's all about the sound.

Hell, you could support speakers using cardboard. Or "free floating" with wire supports. Thin strips of plastic even. Those options would make for extremely light crappy-sounding cabinets.

If I recall he isn't as wrong as you think; Epifani for one are using a lighter cab construction as well as lighter drivers. Done correctly, this does not impact cab quality.

Okay, regardless, I would stand on top of any 2x10 on the market, and I bet I weigh more than most peoples racks.

The lighter cab construction is not that much lighter, I would imagine. Billfitzmaurice could probably correct. Even if they went with 1/2" wood rather than 3/4" wood, a box that small will be very sturdy indeed.

There have been literally dozens of threads where people asked "should I swap neo speakers into my existing older Schroeder/Berg/Epi cab" and where the replies were almost universally: "go ahead, but you won't be saving as much weight as you would by buying the newer neo cab designs, because the new cab boxes themselves (especially the baffles) are much lighter than the old designs."

thanks guys, i know most of the weight is from the magnets, but this thing just FEELS like it would break you know, i definatly think the wood used might be thinner because you can feel it give just a tiny bit even by pushing down on it

Something like that happened to my Mesa cabinets- I put my Bass 400 on top and it literally split both cabients in two, one right after the other. I still played the show though, as the head was undamaged by the fall.

Epifanis, Markbass cabs, GK Neos-- all these cabs as far as I know are made with high quality, lightweight birch and are braced in ways that many heavier cabs are not. The technology is sound-- go ahead and put your heavy rack on that Epi, it's not gonna give on you:).
