Weird noise!

ok, so the EI (electrical interference) is coming from your instruments. Frustrating!

Do you rent a basement suite or live in any situation where someone else might have plugged something into the electrical system that you don't have control of? Flourescent lights can do that, but there are plenty of other things that can, also.

Is your audio interface USB connected? Sometimes USB can have issues with computer electrical noise, although it's much more rare with laptops since they don't contain 110v ac power supplies in the case....

Yes it is USB connected. But as I said I don't think it's my interface because I get the same noise when playing with my amp sim pedal.

Right, sorry, I remember you saying that now.

Then its got to be something in the proximity of your instruments. Something is generating noise that is being picked up by your instrument's pickups/electronics.

Something new maybe, above you, below you, near you...

This stuff totally sucks - I get your pain.

Sounds to me like the classic you're too close to your computer interference.

Especially when you can move and it changes, that's the giveaway.

It's usually the computer and case/fans, not the interface that can cause this.

Check your shielding and grounding on the instruments.

Move away from your computer.

yea but it's a laptop - they don't normally generate the same interference levels as a desktop. Still worth a shot. I still say it's something aside from your computer....

although one way to tell would be if you get the same sound problems without the computer running. Can your interface run from a cell charger (which also generates usb standard 5v high current)? You coudl try that and see if you hear it still through interface's headphone output (although you might not hear anything if interface doesn't do zero latency monitoring using direct hardware without needing computer control)...

Or plug into an amp right in same aread, see if it does it (an amp that has lots of HF .. many bass amps will mask that noise by design, but you want to know if it exists without being masked by the amp...)

It sounds like you've got you're volume knob up full and are using your gain knob as the volume control. If that's applicable to the situation.

Does it happen when you have no instrument connected but are still monitoring/recording from your interface's 1/4" input?

Does it happen when you have your volume turned all the way down (off) on your instrument?

I had a similar problem once with a laptop, noise when plugged in, OK on batteries. I switched to a different power supply on the laptop and it went away.

Does it happen everywhere or have you only experienced it in one room?

Is it an old building? Sometimes the wiring can get wonky in old places.

Is your cellphone near the amp? That causes mine some trouble.

Is there anything else new that's electrical in the room, or even in the house, like changing to a new wifi, satellite. etc.

There can be a myriad of causes, you'll have to search it out. Move the amp around to different places. If only played it at home, take it all somewhere else.

Electricity is a funny thing...but usually doesn't leave is laughing....
