Weird one from last night...

We did Stop Making Sense, the whole movie, last night in costume.

There was a guy standing on the front row, I think I've seen him at our shows before. He was with his girl, getting down and enjoying himself through the first half hour of tunes. When we went to Naive Melody, I used a patch on my Future Impact synth. Dude catches my eye and it's like he's in a panic, pointing at my rig and mouthing "No, no!" while shaking his head. It really threw me off: was something terrible happening, obscured by my earplugs? I looked around the bandstand to feel for stink-eye on stage. But no.

Dude walked over to the sound man and complained, then he went outside for the rest of the show, leaving his girl there by herself.

I found the sound guy while we were tearing down: Hey, was my tone really heinous for that song? He said "No, you sounded great, and that dude was really pissing me off. He thought your amp was broken."

Guess some folks just can't deal with certain timbres....

Maybe it occurred to him that this must not, in fact, be the place.

Slightly adjacent story, though at a rehearsal rather than a gig. We're dialing in IEMs, which the band had just adopted. Playing through "Just a Girl" by No Doubt. The singer gets kind of freaked out and says there's some kind of feedback in the system and we have to figure out where it's coming from and fix it. There's no feedback in the system. I was playing the harmonics in the bass part and she had never heard anyone play them before (nor noticed me doing it when we were using wedges).

For the record, I'm utterly envious that you have a gig playing through Stop Making Sense. I would LOVE to do that.

Hahahahaha that's a winner.

This was the third time in about three years that we've done the whole thing. It's so much damn fun.

He was pestering the sound guy? Say it once, why say it again? I hate people when they’re not polite.
