Weird one with an E string….

Last week, I had a buddy show me his late-model USA Fender Jazz, not sure which one of the umpteen versions, but a very nice passive model.

He said the E string went dead very shortly after he put it on (EB Slinkies). Of course, I said, just replace it. He said, no, play it with no amplification. And wow…just thumping, okay slapping it with my thumb was producing a nice round zingy tone from that string. But amplified, it sounded like a dead string. I’ve never seen such.
Might anyone have ideas why this is happening? I suggested changing the string anyway just to see and I’ve heard back since then.
