Weird question

Stupid question I know, but if you guys were looking for a bass as similiar to a Gibson thunderbird as possible but isn't a thunderbird what would you guys pick? So far I feel like a precision or ripper is my best bet but i figure I'd ask you fine gents :)

hey youngmanhood, keep your eyes open for a Gibson IV bass. they're all mahogany and have TB+ pickups. they're shaped more like a pbass and have an arrowhead headstock. they pop up on ebay once in a while and can generally be had for $500-700.

I played the Gibson ripper RI today, IMO it sucked pretty bad. Neck felt like sand paper and the pup was pretty bad sounding.
that's because 50 kids before you played it....oooh,oooh, mommy can me and my brother go to the guitar store while your in the beauty salon? :rollno::mad::spit:

"sure honey, have fun, I'll text you when I'm done"

"hey bro", check out my awesome slap technique.....crack bang slam --oops, put that one back noone will ever know :scowl:

Check out what you are considering for yourself and make your own judgement. If a Ripper Bass is one of your considerations I'd try to hunt down a vintage one to test it out if possible. You can check out a new limited edition one I guess, if you can find a Gibson dealer that has one in stock. I owned an original Ripper back in the 70's, and it was pretty decent bass that I gigged for 20 + years along with my other basses. If a T-Bird catches your interest, they do seem to be available as well. Go with what moves you as the individual musician that you are. P-Basses are a time proven classic, nuff said. All any of us here can do is offer opinions for whatever they are worth. The search is the fun part if you make it so. Who knows? You might find something else that catches your fancy and screams " This is the One! "

I don't know if Gibson still makes the Money bass, but that was a pretty killer sounding bass that was a bit more traditional than the T-bird. It has a standard sized double cut body, set neck (mahogany body, mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard, if I remember right) and chrome T-bird plus pickups. They could be found for less than a grand new.

No actually. This bass is pretty new there, and its at this little discrete location, hidden from children except me. LOL I'm gentle tho. It was in good condition, just the pup didn't sound all that good and the neck finish was crappy, prolly a poor job at the factory. I swear sometimes the basses I play there, they're so fresh I must be the first person to touch em since they got there! :bassist:
