Weird resonance issues -- can someone explain?

Just bought a new bass and I haven't had it professionally set up yet, so maybe this will all go away next week, but I'm still curious about what's going on here:

Certain notes on the G string (edit: and the same notes on the D string) are causing a ****load of resonance on the other strings, basically making the base unplayable, because the notes sustain after I've dampened the G string.

Not all the notes, but at least half. And sometimes it's just the E string that resonates, other times it's the A or the D strings and plenty of times it seems to be some weird combination of the three.

Can anyone explain what's going on?

Thanks!
