Weird String Sound Issue

Hey everyone,

I recently bough a Dingwall NG3 Multiscale Bass (the scale is 34"-37") and wanted to change my strings and I have a weird sound issue wit the low B string tuned down to A that I cannot fix.

Here is what happens:

I use Stainless Steel strings from Dingwall for for the E, A, D, G strings,

but the B string from Dingwall is too thin for me for a Drop A tuning, so I wanted to use a D'Addario Custom .145 String (PSB145TSL ProSteel) It's a super long scale string, because the low B has a 37" scale length on the Dingwall.

However, the string does not sound clear at all, there is a strange hissing noise when I play it. At first I though the string was broken, but I bought the same string again and the same issue occurred.

I use the same string (PSB145T - long scale, though, not super long scale) on my Ibanez 34" Bass and it sounds amazing.

I then tried a different string that I had lying around on my Dingwall. It's basically the same string but Nickel Wound instead of Stainless steel (D'Addario XB145TSL)

Does anyone know what is happening here? Why does the Nickel String sound great but the stainless steel one sounds so strange? Could it be that I received 2 broken strings in a row? Or is this how stainless steel strings sound on a Dingwall bass? But then why do the other stainless steel strings (E, A, D, G) sound great?

I hope someone can help me =(

I can't edit m first post. There was a mistake in my YouTube video. The second sound sample was the Dingwall with the Nickel String, not Stainless steel.

I would ask the manufacturer. Is it possible the string tuned down that low does not produce enough tension on the saddle? Is there a pole piece to adjust?

No the tension is good. Why would the nickel string sound fine and the stainless steel not? It's the same tension. If anything, the steel string should have more tension.

I think some strings have a larger core producing more tension. GHS makes a balanced nickel string for short scales to balance the tension between all strings.

I was using the balanced nickel short scale as an example. Of course this is not what you need.

Contact the manufacturer. They will tell you what strings and tunings the bass was designed for.

Sorry you are having problems but may need to find a stainless steel string of another brand ( mix and match ). I know that’s expensive but if it works it may be your only option. I get wanting to stay with stainless and getting that tone you are looking for. Hope it works out. I have a feeling they could send you 5 more and you would have the same issue. I have had some strings work on one bass and not the other, not sure why. Sometimes it’s a matter of the break angle of the nut and bridge. There is lots of help here for that but you probably tried that already. I had to add an aluminum spacer on the back of the bridge on my p bass as the E saddle was touching the silk end. I tried cutting back the silk but it still happened. I was getting a chorus effect on the E string. With the spacer adding some distance between the end of the string and saddle all is good and I’m happy. Keep us posted !
