I like using both open and pinch harmonics in my playing. I'm not a shredder, nor am I Jaco, but it's fun and it works real nice with certain fuzzes. I recently bought a set of rounds again to put on my newest bass, and while noodling on it I came across a thought.
Can you reliably, scientifically tell the harmonic content of the plucked open string by the response of each of the harmonic nodes across the length of the string? I mean it in these terms: could you compare the sound of two different models of string, theoretically playing each harmonic node with identical form and force on each, and then compare the results to see what the overall tonal difference is?
I swear this is not a shower thought. I wouldn't get my bass wet...
EDIT: I do know that the harmonics that you can access on an open string don't cover the scope of harmonics generated when the string is plucked, but just humor me.
