Weird wedding situation. Just read it...

Is he planning on paying you?

Nope. It's a favor to him, so I don't expect or want to get paid for it. I just don't want to have to pay for possibly broken gear on top of. And better yet, I don't want to pay for a lifetime of totally embarrassing memories.

I think the plan is to basically play more wedding friendly material, but he did specifically mention that he wanted to throw one of ours in there and a few that are completely inappropriate for a wedding. I'm not sure what that means exactly, but knowing him it's probably something along the lines of Judas Priest or some King Diamond crap.

Someone above mentioned having an iPod loaded with good party music plugged into the PA and ready to roll. No offense, but your band doesn't sound like the kind that can sustain a good variety of mainstream party music for very long. Maybe going back and forth from band to iPod/DJ might work.

Weddings typically cover a wide demographic, people from all walks of life, all ages. Little kids. Old folks.

With any luck you can talk him into playing the egotistical crap later in the evening after everyone has had some fun.

Still, I gotta say asking your friends to work at your wedding is always a little tacky. I know some people are cool with it, but if I was the groom, it's something I would try to avoid.

And as the groom, instead of taking it upon myself to entertain them or show off my mad guitar skills, I'd be more interested in being a good host and mingling with my guests, spending time with my new bride, etc.

Long story short, you're right, the situation is just magoo, even a little immature.

He does realize it's his wife's wedding and not a bar gig right?

Actually, I do kinda take offense to that. :scowl: We are all fairly accomplished musicians and can play pretty much anything we want. I can easily learn 4+ hours worth of traditional wedding band material in the next 8 months if that's whats called upon, and the same would be said for the other guys in the band.

Unfortunately, that's not whats called upon. I don't think we'll be playing the entire time either, I think he's planning on the Ipod for a good amount of the entertainment for the evening.

Once I get more details, I'll gladly post them up. I'm just as anxious to see how this unfolds. Something tells me that I won't have any more info for a while. I really want to see the "set list" that he thinks we're going to play. The only other thing he mentioned directly was Bon Jovi, since his mother asked for it.

Yep...he's told pretty much all his friends & family about it and they all seem to be on board. That's why he got so pissed in the first place.

This is the part I was referring to.

I wasn't saying your band couldn't play traditional mainstream wedding party music, but it seemed pretty clear they wouldn't.

Sorry, I should have clarified that.

At any rate, your apprehension is justified, for several reasons beyond what your band actually plays (see Post #124). I wish you only the best.

I have officiated almost 2 dozen weddings and attended about 100 of them. I have seen an occasional groom get up and sing one for his wife. Sometimes it is decent, but if not, it usually works out. What you are describing sounds like the type of wedding I would avoid any association with. If a couple came to me and asked to perform their ceremony and described a scenario like this, I would seriously ask the groom if he really felt ready to get married.

Well, it sounds like you have been basically backed into a corner. My only suggestion would be to go as well prepared as possible and take your low-end gear (if you have any) that you won't mind having beer spilled on.

Setup, rock out, and have the best time possible. If anything does go wrong, at least try to make sure you weren't at fault.

EDIT:

Oh, and pics or it didn't happen :)

Nope...first wedding for both of them

I've got what most people would consider low end bass (MIM P bass) that will come with me, but no low end amp.

My drummer actually said that I let anyone play my Modulus or Sadowsky that he'll punch me in the face.
