Weird wedding situation. Just read it...

I just think they're skimping on the wrong parts.

I second that. I just got married, and about 10% of the budget went to the band. I didn't have time to sit down, much less eat or play, but the music was good. Nothing is as annoying as having to listen to bad music when you're stressed out. Or when you're in a good mood. Or ever. :)

He's not hiring a photographer...a work friend of his is going to do it.

Oh god. Where's the *cringe* animation? But a good photographer is indeed very expensive.

I vote with the others recommending bringing indestructible gear, and treating it as entertainment. I'd probably also bring an iPod or computer for when the band/guests/bride have had enough. Increases the odds that you'll like the music that gets played if the band gets tired of jamming. :)

Most importantly: don't stress too much. That's the groom's job.

I kinda doubt any bass players are going to have the balls to do it in the first place, if there are any bass players in the crowd at all.

Never underestimate the power of drunk people, especially at a wedding. Hell, I once saw a bride and groom nearly have sex on top of their own wedding cake, let alone some crazy audience/band interactions...people claiming to be musicians...a punch bowl thrown at a drummer...belligerent best men/bridesmaids grabbing mics/instruments and doing really obnoxious stuff....

If you think you have a difficult situation now, wait until you're debating suing someone over destruction of property. As Monty Python would say, "run away, run away!"

Can't believe OP is still on the fence as to whether to go ahead with this or not; seriously man, tell your friend that you're not going to do this, let alone let random people play your gear. Because basically, take the pics up higher in this thread, chain em up in a movie, add the sound of your bass being violated, throw in 6 months of hearing your friend b*tch you out for screwing up his wedding, then throw in another 6 months of friend's butthurt raging, and add in the total meltdown of your band somewhere in the middle.

Ya rly.

If I say I don't want to do it, that will most likely happen as well. He really seems to have his heart set on doing this. Maybe I'll lay down to law about my gear. I was never happy about the idea in general, but if I have to do this (which it's looking like it...if I don't I may lose a friend over it) I at least want to make it somewhat comfortable for me.

I hate to say this but, hire a DJ or a band that knows how to conduct the entertainment pomp & circumstance and have a great time.

They won't hire a DJ or a band. It's too expensive.

Have you gotten a life insurance policy for yourself?

Huh? For myself? If anything happens to my gear it very well may be the groom hoping he's got one.

Two thoughts here....
1) The groom doesn't understand that throughout the entire wedding day, and possibly even the honeymoon, he's a prop. Nobody gives a rat's patootie about him except the tuxedo rental shop, and that's just so they get their tux back in one relatively stain-free piece. Therefore, what he wants is totally irrelevant, and he should be forcibly restrained from ruining his bride's day.

2) If this is gonna go down no matter what, you've gotta stack the deck in your favor and make it fun for you, because no matter what happens, he's going to be told he doesn't like the results (if you get my drift). So get some ringer's from the local musician's community, and create a "shadow" setlist that he doesn't know about, songs that you'll break into when least expected.... Stuff like... ohhh...
Prodigy - Smack My B*tch Up, or
Captain Beefheart - Bat Chain Puller (well, anything by the Captain really) or
W.A.S.P. - Animal (F*** Like A Beast)
or if you REALLY need to cause mass nausea, some Ke$ha.
This one!!! Do this for sure. And set up a video camera.

Bring a cheapo fretless tuned B E A D.

That should make the jam interesting.
As for letting people play your stuff, I couldn't have said it better. Watching some drunk fool try to bang out some tunes on a fretless in B standard is hilarious to even think about.

But in all seriousness, you need to set the groom straight and/or lay YOUR ground rules if you do indeed feel stuck going through with this.

Well, the major difference is this: it's either 6 months of rage directed at you when you tried your best and did it anyway, and you end up feeling like s*** because you did your thing, and you're getting slagged for it... *or* ... it's 6 months of rage directed at you while you know he's just raging because he didn't get his shiny toy to play with.

From where I'm sitting, I'd rather deal with the rage and know it's coming from someone who's throwing a temper tantrum like a spoilt child and thus easy to ignore.

As far as losing a friend goes; let me give you some advice on this one. Friends are only friends if things go both ways. He asked you to play, and asked you to let other people play your gear. He, himself, is not going to let people play his gear, but he expects you to. I'm pretty sure if you tell him that you'll let people play your gear only if he lets people play his gear, he'll decline. In other words, he ain't a friend. If he was a true friend, he'd listen to your objections and at least try to find a compromise instead of copping a diva/child attitude about it.

In my opinion, tell him to go urinate up a rope, and let the chips fall where they may. Some "friends" aren't worth the hassle of dealing with them.

So sad this is too long to sig.
