I really like the HS...it has a little less low end when everything is set flat and a little more bite in the upper mids. There is still a TON of low end on tap though via the EQ. The single-coil gets a pretty decent, albeit VERY modern, P-bass tone when soloed. On the HH I used to have, I would NEVER have soloed the neck pickup. I think I could work with a Bongo in any pickup configuration, but the HS suits me best....set everything flat and let it rip. Some have said that the HS is a more "refined" and "polite" Bongo, but I have to disagree...I think it just has less low end when everything is set flat. It still punches and tears right through a mix, but with a smidge less rumble and a bit more clarity.

When I first saw the Bongos, well, I'll jsut say I didn't like the look. I've been a 4 string player since the early 90's and wanted to get a 5 string but never found one that felt good. Then about 3 yrs ago, I walked into a GC and picked up a 5HH, just out of curiosity. OMG- I fell in love, it just felt like a part of me. Since then, I wanted one - Red with a white pickguard. But I could not afford one then.

About 6-8 months ago, I got to point where I could afford one, but I couldn't find a red one. So everyday, I checked craigslist and talkbass - looking for her. About 6 weeks ago, I was ready to bite the bullet and just order one and pay full price and wait it out. The day I was going to place the order, one popped up on GC's used merchandise in Maryland (I'm in GA). She was in perfect condition and the price was lower than I'd ever seen a used 5HH. So I jumped all over it as quickly as I could.

She was beautiful without a scratch on her, even the headstock. The action was a bit high and not nearly enough relief in the neck but these were just symptoms that she needed some attention. I adjusted the truss rod over several days, then dialed in the bridge saddles and intonation and she is now perfect.

My girlfriend helped me name her; "Scarlett".

It's taken me about 3-4 weeks and about 6-7 gigs to get used to playing a 5 string, but I'm starting to be able to play without thinking about it anymore. ..and I'm almost comfortable with the 4-band eq - there's a lot of room there!!

I've never had an instrument that I was so totally enamored with and that opened up so much for me. ..and I've been playing in bands for almost 30 yrs. I haven't picked up my 72 P Bass or trusty Kawai F2B since and I'm not sure when I will.

I LOVE BONGOS!!!
