As long as you have one friend there you trust, bring your own camera and deputize someone. Back before I had a digital camera I'd just buy a disposable before the gig, and hand it to someone in the crowd. Usually someone I was at least acquainted with, but not necessarily a close friend.

I figured out long ago that if I didn't take pics, all the shows would tend to run together in what's left of my memory. For my main band, I've even kept a running list of gigs-- venue, date, band members, and bill. We're an originals band, so it's not like we play every weekend or anything, and there've been a couple periods of about a year where the band went on hiatus, looking for new members or just recharging. But since we started in the late '90's even with a couple years of layoffs we're up to 118 shows. Unless I missed some. Nothing compared to the cover band guys that play 3 or 4 nights a week though.

Some good points. Ah now I just need to find a new group of like-minded musicians in this hell hole I live in :D

I'm very blessed in that respect. I live in a smallish college town with a large state university and one of the country's larger community colleges. Lots of young musicians, bands, and venues. The proportion of muso's to normals is through the roof here.

It helps to do what you can to keep a high profile too. I've tried to keep active in bands, on local music website forums, and wrote about music for a couple local mags and one regional mag. If nothing else, just go to shows as often as you can.

haha thanks-well the place i live in has a rather large university, is a big city, and has a few fairly large community college campus's-and still most of the scene here is that scream metal stuff which I've liked on occasion but it's not to my fancy.

In that case you may wanna find something that may not be your perfect sitch, but that you can at least tolerate, just to keep yourself out on the scene. You run into a lot more people that way.
