yup, I herd it first hand also...No matter what most of these guys are in prison for, they are still human and a lot of them have small children, you sit locked up missing and worrying about your child and one of these bastards walks in the cell block, OVER WITH!! Same thing with rapists!

yup, I herd it first hand also...No matter what most of these guys are in prison for, they are still human and a lot of them have small children, you sit locked up missing and worrying about your child and one of these bastards walks in the cell block, OVER WITH!! Same thing with rapists!
This will probably run against the grain of all the posts here, but as Sandusky was being led away all I could think of was that this man has to have a pretty severe mental illness to do what he did. Just to play devil's advocate here, but shouldn't he be put away for life in a mental institution somewhere, forever cranked up on thorazine? Any way you look at it he'll die an inmate somewhere.
The man was deemed competent to stand trial. I don't think he was crazy. I think he used a position of power to prey on those weaker than him or who were "required" to view him as an authority figure. Of course his attorneys are going to pull the mental health angle at this stage in the game. it's a desperate last-act. the man is a predator.
Well, but you also have to think about what sort of mentality it takes to prey on children and to use his power of authority to do what he did. The dude's REAL sick in the head, there's no doubt about that at all in my book.
Despite that, I still think they oughta castrate him and lock him up for life. Problem solved.
He is a bad and rotten man. I'm not letting this scumbag off with the mentally ill excuse. His wife should be locked up too.

I'm wondering how much my state income taxes will increase in order to pay for the massive settlements the victims will receive from the state. You know the State of PA will pull out the checkbook and quietly make those claims go away - it would be terrible publicity to contest them vigorously. PSU will have a difficult time getting their liability insurers to pay off on these claims, since it is pretty clear they knew about it and did nothing.
I always jokingly referred to PSU as that big junior college with a really good football team. That looks to be closer to the truth than I thought.

The mentality to prey on children in this case, imo, is the same mentality that compells some businessmen to travel to Thailand to dabble in the child sex trades...it's because they are depraved fetishists with no concern of who is hurt in the process.
While it's a definite that he's "sick in the head" ...imo it's not a "mental illness" in the traditional sense where he "knew not what he was doing / not in control of his faculties, his dog made him do it", in this capacity is what I am saying. He knew full well what was up while he was gratifying himself on the innocent.
Shoot him in the back of the head, make the family pay for the bullet. Every single one of those kids he screwed is facing years (if not decades) of therapy, and knowing that he will never ever get out of his punishment may just give them a little peace.
Well Jerry has had his day in court and justice prevailed. It still has me very P.O.'ed that coach was made a fall guy. Seems reporting what he heard to his superiors wasn't enough. At his age he was to man all the campus entrances, wrest the keys to all the buildings Jerry had access to from his hands and personally man a crows nest overseeing the campus to insure the creep would stay out. Terrible what Jerry did to ALL his victims.
It's whatever you want it to be. For me, it's punishment. I could go with 'nad excision, too.
It's about taking a dangerous element out of the population, official punishment for crime(s) committed, and rehabilitation of the individual where possible.
One can be crazy and still competent to stand trial.
One needs to be not only crazy - but a very specific crazy - for a mental health defense.
The M'Naghten rules specify that you must not only be mentally ill, but specifically mentally ill such that you do not understand what you are doing is legally wrong.

Either he was competent to run the football program (and thus should have done something about the fact that Sandusky was still prowling the football facilities mere WEEKS before being arrested) or he was too old and incompetent to hold that responsibility - and thus should have been fired.
So either he was competent and should have been fired for his failures with regard to Sandusky, or he was incompetent due to age and should have been fired for being incompetent due to age.
My opinion.....he was incompetent due to age. Dr. Cheese brought up in the last PSU thread that Paterno stayed well beyond what he should have. I agree. Probably partially his pride, and partially no one at PSU wanted to be "the guy/gal" who fired Paterno.
But really, we don't know if Paterno stepping down five or ten years ago would have stopped this. Sandusky was respected about as much as Paterno on campus, so it is likely he would have continued to operate as he did under a different head coach. Replacing one piece of the program (head coach) wouldn't have been enough in my opinion as the coverup when on up the food chain past Paterno.

There is no doubt that others above Paterno ALSO hold huge responsibility for allowing this to continue - specifically the BoT, Spanier, Schultz, and Curley.
Their failings in no way exonerate or excuse the failings of Paterno though.
Nope, it sure doesn't. But this notion some have put out there that Paterno could have stopped all this years ago is incorrect. That is all I'm saying. From top to bottom, I don't think anyone in authority did the right thing at PSU in regards to this matter.
I still think the football program should have been abandoned for a period of time, but it generates too much money for that to happen.
