I can’t say that I saw this coming...
Sea shanties are your soundtrack of 2021. Seriously — CNN
...even with being in the auxiliary of a punky celtic/ska band that has been throwing this sort of thing into their musical gumbo for quite some time. Who knew? It remains to be seen if this brings a new lease on life for old time sailing balladry, or if it will be fad of the season, sort of like how bluegrass had its 15 minutes in the wake of Oh Brother, Were Art Thou? But of course, the Sex Pistols(well, Steve Jones) was all over this a long time ago....

You all remember the swing revival? Maybe rock will be cool again in 2029.

Not a true sea shanty work song (created after the fact "in the style of"), but here I am messing about with The Mingulay Boat Song:

The version currently raging on TikTok is pretty good too:

I think Gordon Bok's version is my favorite though:

Perhaps they already have without people noticing.
Not a bad thing, necessarily, I think as music has a very long history - 'looking' at historic events.

If we were to try to expunge the impacts of slavery from our musical heritage, "American music" styles from jazz to blues to modern pop would suddenly cease to exist.

(On the other hand, "Brown Sugar" is still cringe-worthy, as much as I love the tune, yeah, I could never perform it in public!)

Not really a shanty, but still one of my all time favorites...

I just thought, didn't Tubular Bells end with a sea shanty? That makes them prog so it's ok to play one surrounded by banks of keyboards while wearing a cape.

Those of us of a "certain age" and US raising learned a ton of these in elementary school from those little red songbooks.

Then they showed up again during the Great Folk Scare

  19. More like Proto Yacht Rock.

  20. I was wondering why I kept seeing compilations of these songs come up. Brought another great album by Hal Willner to mind though so I can't complain.
