I wouldn’t give them that much credit, it’s been going on for a while. I guess you didn’t read the original post, or else missed the Sex Pistols reference, as well as that Sensational Alex Harvey Band track listed, plus a couple of things that the Byrds recorded; as mentioned above, during the late 50’s/early 60’s folk boom, it was a subgenre revived along with many others...

...even with being in the auxiliary of a punky celtic/ska band that has been throwing this sort of thing into their musical gumbo for quite some time. Who knew? It remains to be seen if this brings a new lease on life for old time sailing balladry, or if it will be fad of the season, sort of like how bluegrass had its 15 minutes in the wake of Oh Brother, Were Art Thou? But of course, the Sex Pistols(well, Steve Jones) was all over this a long time ago....

Wot, “Friggin”? That’s where a lot of what the Murphys, Real Mackenzies, etc, do comes from. Pogues as well, of course, but a slightly different thing.
